District One Pride and the City of Lockhart are gearing up for the Fourth Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Memorial March and Celebration.
Though the extended forecast calls for a chance of rain on Monday, with temperatures between the high-40s and the mid-60s, the weather this year promises to be more cooperative than

last, when the march was postponed due to freezing temperatures.
According to event organizers Margaret Carter and Kenny Roland, the celebration will begin at Lockhart City Hall at 9 a.m. Marchers will proceed through the Courthouse Square and up Commerce Street to Martin Luther King, Jr., Industrial Boulevard, where Mayor James “Jimmy” Bertram will present a proclamation to the group.
Later, a luncheon will be served at Cedar Hall, beginning at 11:30 a.m., leading up to the full program, which starts at 12:15 p.m.
The march itself promises to be one of the largest yet, Carter said. In addition to walkers, bicycle riders and children in strollers, the St. John”s Colony Trail Riders are expected to make an appearance again this year. Additionally, vehicle transportation will be provided for those who want to participate, but cannot walk the route because of age or health concerns.
Before the march, Lockhart Exxon at the corner of 183 and East Market Street has agreed to provide coffee and hot chocolate, free of charge to participants.
Keynote speakers for the program include Rev. Ernest Wilson and Hon. Judge Todd Blomerth. According to Roland, this year”s program hopes to illustrate the importance of unity, regardless of race, religion or background. The theme, “Remember! Act! Celebrate!” gives a nod both to history and the future.
Carter said the program will continue along that line. Students from the Talented and Gifted classes from at least two local elementary schools have been invited to participate and be recognized in honor of the contributions that will be made by future generations.
In the event of inclement weather, call Roland at (512) 698-1846 or Carter at (512) 398-5975 for event confirmation.
