An Austin youngster lost his battle for life on Wednesday morning after a one-car accident in Lockhart on Tuesday.

Jackson Norris, 15, who authorities say lived in Austin, was crossing Highway 183 near the Wal-Mart parking lot when a southbound pickup truck struck him as he crossed.

Witnesses at the scene said Norris was crossing

against the red light, and that traffic on Highway 183 had a green light when the accident occurred. According to those accounts, he was thrown several feet down the highway after the impact.

When emergency services arrived on scene, the patient was unconscious but breathing. Lockhart-Caldwell County EMS transported him to the Lockhart Municipal Airport, where a helicopter was waiting to take him to Dell Children’s Medical Center for treatment of very serious injuries, including a head injury and several broken bones, one report said.

A relative of the ?Norris’s, also 15, had run across the highway moments before, and was waiting, uninjured, for him to cross when he was struck by the vehicle, identified as a 2001 Ford Ranger driven by Michael Roup.

The Lockhart Police Department did not report any charges pending or filed against Roup in connection with the accident on Tuesday. The incident remains under investigation.

Lockhart Police Department Chief Mike Lummus announced on Wednesday, just before 1 p.m., that he had received notification that Norris passed away at Dell Children’s Medical Center earlier that day.
