Dorothy Casteel passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, in Lockhart, Texas. She was born on Feb. 19, 1926, in Lockhart, Texas to Hans and Ella Voigt Wittenburg.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband W.R. “Bill” Casteel, USAF (Ret.); and grandchildren, Karen Faith Casteel, Blake Carter and Ross Carter.

She is survived by brother, Hans

Ross Wittenburg and Mary Ann, of Edna, Texas.  Surviving children are W.M. “Skip” Casteel and Anna, of Wimberley, Priscilla Hellums and Terry, of Austin, Dixie Grant, of McNeil, Texas, Jo Ellen Young and Jerry, of Baytown, Carol Martin and Stanley, of Lockhart, David Casteel and Kathy, of Houston, Wayne R. Casteel and Leslie, of Lockhart, and Ralph M. Casteel and Frances, of Benavidas, Texas. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

“Mamma” was born and raised in Lockhart and graduated from Lockhart High in 1943. She and Bill married on April 10, 1960, joining two families, Bill with four children and Mom with three children. Within a short time, Bill was transferred to Sevilla, Spain, and the adventure began. Their eighth child, Ralph, was born in Spain. They also lived in Columbus, Miss., and Baytown, Texas, returning to Lockhart for their retirement years.

Mamma loved her large family and was a fabulous cook. Her Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and desserts were not only enjoyed by her family, but many in the Lockhart community. She also enjoyed reading, shopping, and playing bridge. She and Dad always had a huge garden and canned many vegetables every year. She loved her many dogs, and always made sure the stray cats, birds and squirrels were well fed.

Visitation was Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, and service was Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011 at McCurdy Funeral Home in Lockhart, Texas.
