As in past summers, the Lockhart High School Athletic Department has allowed the weight room to stay open for limited summer hours. Many students have been taking advantage of the weight room’s hours. Several have been working very hard to prepare for the upcoming football season.
Three

LHS seniors who have been working hard at the weight room and who hope to contribute to the 2007-2008 football season in a positive way are Joe Fuentes, Demetrius Joseph and Edgar Silva. Last Thursday, July 12 all three seniors were glad to talk about what they expected to see in the fall.
“We always have high expectations,” Silva said. “You know, we work as a team, we win as a team. I think we have a good chance at the playoffs.”
Silva went on to say that he was looking forward to being coached by Lockhart Lion’s new head coach, Troy Moses. Joseph felt the same about the Lions’ new leader.
“Coach Moses is a real good coach,” Joseph said. “He’s a good guy on and off the field. I feel like we’re going to surprise a lot of people. I really do think we’re underrated in the Texas Football magazine.”
Fuentes, who had been listening close by, made his way up to where the others were and chimed in.
“This coming season we have a good chance of showing up and impressing everybody,” he said, and his teammates agreed. “I think we have half of our Varsity team coming back. Also, we have more experience. Last year was the first year playing all these new teams in this district. I think we’re going to play better after having played each of these teams who had a playoff run or at least came close.”
The enthusiasm and confidence exhibited by the three young men who will be part of the LHS Lion team was infectious. Underclassmen who were circling around the seniors during the brief interview were listening intently to every word and it was apparent that they were willing to believe what they were hearing from their older peers.
Most impressive was how they felt about the new head coach.
“I think Coach Moses is the perfect guy for the job,” Fuentes said. “His coaching strategies are… it’s like his whole way of coaching and his belief in us as a team is going to help us get where we need to get.”
Silva painted a broader picture with the same positive spin.
“I really do believe we have a good chance at the playoffs because, not only do we have good leadership and good talent, we are all coachable,” he said, flashing his best winner’s smile.
The general consensus from the entire student body at the weight room was that the Lions were headed for great things and it was imperative that they prepare themselves in every way. It seems all the stars are lining up for a successful Lockhart Lion football season. The football players seem ready and willing to do their part. New leadership is in and they too are eager to get to work. When summer practices start next month, they will pull it all together and wait for lightning to strike.
See you at the game this fall.
