Election looms on Tuesday

Early voting continues through Friday afternoon for the upcoming Nov. 8, 2011, election.

In addition to the ten amendments to the Texas Constitution proposed on the ballot, Lockhart voters will be asked to choose a new mayor and two city council members, and voters from the Maxwell area will decide whether Caldwell C

ounty Emergency Services District No. 2 should annex property in the Martindale area.

As of Tuesday evening, City of Lockhart election official Connie Rodriguez reported only 264 early votes had been cast. However, voters who are not able to participate on Election Day are still invited to vote at the Caldwell County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office, 100 E. Market St., in Lockhart, during regular business hours until Friday.

In Lockhart, three seats are up for grabs on the Lockhart City Council.

Incumbent Mayor Ray Sanders, who returned to office in a landslide victory a May 2010 Special Election has decided not to seek re-election. Four local residents have stepped up in hopes of filling the position.

Lew White, a longtime member of the Lockhart City Council currently seated in the District Three single-member position, faces local businessmen Homer “Papa” Shaw and Joseph “JoJo” Bruch, and former LISD Trustee John Manning.

Richard J. “Dick” Wieland, who narrowly missed re-election to one of the council’s at-large positions in November 2010, will face Doug Shomette in an effort to fill White’s District 3 seat.

Incumbent District 4 Councilmember Richard Banks will seek re-election against former District 4 Councilmember and former Lockhart Mayor James “Jimmy” Bertram and longtime Lockhart resident but relative political newcomer Steve Johnson.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8 for those who choose not to vote early. Returns on Election Night can be followed here on www.post-register.com.
