Freshman Lions shut out Travis Rebels 28-0

For the second time this season, the Freshman Lions have shut out their opponent. This time it was the Austin Travis Rebels who went home with a 28-0 score, leaving the Lions celebrating their 3-0 record at Lion Field on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

k,” Freshman Head Coach Gilbert Sandoval said. “The defense set the tone by rushing the Travis quarterback throughout the game forcing two interceptions, both of which were made by Joseph Bell, who took one in for a touchdown. On the offensive side, Vonte Hedspeth scored two additional touchdowns by running behind an excellent offensive line led by Drake Hinojosa. The Freshmen team works hard in the classroom and in practice and all their hard work shows on the field.”
The game began with a touchdown by D’Javonte Hedspeth for a 6-0 Lion lead at the top of the first quarter. Hedspeth’s kick was no good. Despite significant gains by the Lion offense, the Rebels kept the Lions from scoring again ending the first quarter at 6-0.
The second quarter started with the Lions held back for a Travis first-and-10. Travis threw a pass on their first play, which was intercepted by Bell and taken in for a touchdown. Hedspeth’s extra point kick was good for a 13-0 lead. After the Travis quarterback was sacked for a fourth-and-20, the Rebels decided to punt to the Lions, who took the ball at the 36-yard line. After a pass from Chris Jackson to Bell was completed for a first-and-goal, the Lions took a timeout. There were flags on the following play for illegal procedure against the Lions. It was still a Lion first-and-goal. Hedspeth took a handoff to the right side for a touchdown. A two-point conversion was successful and the score changed to 21-0.
In the third quarter, the Travis Rebels were pumped when they returned to the field. They pushed the Lions back with everything they had. Fortunately for the Lions, it was not enough.
The Lions took control of the ball at midfield. The first drive of the quarter had Bell make a 9-yard run for the last touchdown of the night. Hedspeth’s kick was good for a final score of 28-0 at the end of the third.
There was no scoring in the fourth. Both teams kept forcing each other to punt until the game was over.
“Please come out and support the Lions at their next game,” Sandoval said. “It will be at home against Crockett.”
The Freshmen team will host Austin Crockett at Lion Field on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 5:30 p.m.
