Jim Schaller
Jimmy Earl Schaller, 79, of Seguin, passed to Heaven surrounded by his family in Katy, Texas, on Jan. 24, 2015. Jim was born on July 15, 1935 in Okmulgee, Okla., to Earl and Nadine Schaller. He grew up in Maplewood and Sulphur, La., with his brother, Jerry and sister, Joan. He graduated from Sulphur High School and attended McNeese State College. Jim visited family in Wyoming a
nd had a life-long love of this beautiful land. He left home to find work in Wyoming, which began with the highway department and led to 19 years in exploration with Shell Oil. Loving his family and wishing to visit more easily, he acquired his private pilot license and flew home to visit Louisiana.
While training in Houston, he met the love of his life, Jean. They began their 51-year marriage together in a ceremony in Kyle, Texas on July 27, 1963. Jim’s work as a senior seismic operator moved the family frequently around the United States. In 1974, he and Jean settled in Austin to operate a Radio Shack store and then spent 13 years in Lockhart as owners and operators of a Sears catalog store. They “retired” to Seguin to be closer to grandchildren, and Jim held a final job working at Seguin High School. Jim enjoyed time spent outdoors playing softball, coaching little league, playing golf, and hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed gardening and had a gift for cooking. He loved all kinds of history, telling stories, and spending time with family. Jim was a US Army Veteran and a member of First Baptist Church in Seguin. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather and a model of loyalty and integrity.
Jim will be held in loving memory by his wife, Jean Schaller; son, John Schaller and wife, Anne, of Victoria; daughter, JeanAnn and husband, Brian, of Katy; grandchildren, Benjamin and Sarah Naumann and Tavi and Payne Schaller; brother, Jerry Schaller and wife, Dorothy of DeRidder, La.; sister, Joan Taylor and husband, Larry, of Madison, Ga.; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
A worship service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. at Grand Lakes Presbyterian Church in Katy, Texas with the Reverend Dean Pogue officiating. A gathering of family and friends will begin at 10 a.m., prior to the service. Internment will follow at a later date at Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Houston Hospice, First Baptist Church of Seguin or Grand Lakes Presbyterian Church of Katy.
