Jo Ann Weber

Jo Ann Weber, 70, of Luling passed away Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, after a long and hard-fought battle with breast cancer. She was born outside Luling on Aug. 22, 1934 in Gander Slough, Texas to Bennie and Pinkie Pierce.

She graduated from Luling High School in 1951 and subsequently went to work as the secretary to the Superintendent of Luling School D

istrict until her marriage to Buddy Weber, also of Luling, in 1956.

JoAnn spent much of her early life in the horse racing industry working in Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico, Sunland Park in El Paso, and Centennial Race Track in Denver, Colo. In 1968 Buddy and JoAnn returned to Luling where she worked at the Green Cross Hospital until the birth of their son, Fred Weber, in 1970. She became a full-time mother before returning to work in 1986 as Deputy Tax Assessor in Caldwell County.

In 1987 she went to work as a legal secretary for Charles Kimbrough in Lockhart and continued to work for Charles after his election as Caldwell County Criminal District Attorney in 1990. In 1994 JoAnn returned to the horse racing industry as a membership director for the Texas Thoroughbred Breeders Association. At the time of her death she was the Executive Director of the Texas Racing Hall of Fame at Retama Park in San Antonio.

Jo Ann was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church of Luling, a participant in the Walk to Emmaus and a former member of the Luling Independent School Board of Trustees.
Over the years, Jo Ann touched the lives of countless people. She never met a stranger and never turned down someone in need. Everyone was someone in her eyes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, B.L. Pierce. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Shelly Weber of Lockhart, and most importantly her granddaughter Jenna Layne Weber.

A celebration of her life was held Nov. 30 at the First United Methodist Church of Lockhart.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the First United Methodist Church of Luling, or the charity of one”s choice.
