John Joseph Grigar IV
A memorial service for John Joseph Grigar IV, age 39, was held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 in the outdoor garden of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Lockhart, Texas.
Joseph was born on February 24, 1979 and died on Sunday, April 29, 2018 in an accident just a couple miles from his parents’ country home near Lockhart where he was born and raised.
He is survived by his son, John Joseph “Johnny” Grigar V, age 9, of College Port, Texas; and his mom and dad, Janet Frnka Grigar and John Joseph “JJ” Grigar III of Lockhart. Also, a younger sister Katie Grigar Potts of Fayetteville, Arkansas and her husband Matt and their three children Avery, Will and Stockton.
At an early age, Joseph developed a love for the sport of soccer and became one of the top players in the area and lead his team to a district championship in 1997. After graduating from Lockhart High School he continued his education at Austin Community College and worked part-time at Logos, his family’s business.
Like his father, Joseph loved music and enjoyed playing the piano and guitar and also loved dancing with his mother.
In 2006, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was later stationed at Whidbey Island, Washington where he received numerous meritorious awards for his dedicated service. He served one tour in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Joseph was discharged from the Navy in 2012 as an AE3 Aviation Electrician.
Never one to be found inside, or sitting idle, Joseph had a true passion for the outdoors. He spent much of his time fishing, hunting, water skiing, riding a tractor, grilling or tending a campfire. He and Johnny would often retreat to Lake Sheridan with his grandparents of Eagle Lake and East Bernard, with his parents, or with close friends. There he enjoyed the simple pleasures of life.
The one thing that would draw him indoors was a pool table; he was an excellent pool player, competing in Austin and elsewhere. But most of all, Joseph loved spending time with his son and was so proud of him and the young man that he has become.
At the time of his death, Joseph was employed as a Diagnostic Technician with LCRA, Marble Falls Western District, and for the past several weekends, including his final day, he was working with his dad constructing a music studio at his parents’ home.
In addition to his parents and sister, Joseph is survived by his grandmother Angeline “Granny” Grigar of East Bernard, Texas; uncles Don Frnka and Jeff Frnka of Eagle Lake, Texas; aunts Rose Roquemore of Granbury, Texas and Connie Grigar Janis of Lockhart; uncles and aunts, Tim and Janice Scott Grigar of Gig Harbor, Washington; Ronnie and Nancy Grigar Stewart of Geronimo, Texas; and Ronnie Grigar and wife Julie of East Bernard. Plus, numerous other cherished cousins, family members and friends.
Joseph was preceded in death by grandfather, John Joseph Grigar Jr. of East Bernard; grandparents, Fred R. and Eunice Frnka of Eagle Lake; and cousin Seth Grigar of Gig Harbor, Washington.
The memorial service, officiated by The Rev. Tom Bruns of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, was held in the outdoor garden as a tribute to Joseph’s love of nature. The offering of full Military Honors, led by Commander Juan DeLeon of the Lockhart American Legion Post 41, included a 21-gun salute, taps, folding of the American flag and presentation of the flag to Joseph’s mother.
Memorials in memory of John Joseph Grigar IV may be made to his son’s education fund. Checks should be made payable to “Texas College Savings Plan” and sent to: Logos, 108 N.
