John Howard Lewis born on Dec. 26, 1931, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Nov. 15, 2016 at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents, Victoria Kight Lewis and Elias Mitchell Lewis; sisters Verdie, Lewis Jacobs, Vallie Lewis Carelock, and Virginia Lewis Tanner; and brothers, Edsel Lewis, Ralph Lewis and Osman Lewis.

Survivors include beloved wife, Shirley G

riffee Lewis; children, Keith Mitchell Lewis and wife Felicity Lane, John Mark Lewis, and Lisa Lewis Love and husband, Michael A. Love; and two precious granddaughters, Amanda Love and Allison Love Lingo and husband Jacob Lingo as well as precious great-grandson, Mason Lingo.

Also surviving are sisters, Velma Lewis Gibby and Vonice Lewis Arnette; and many nieces and nephews.

John was born in Douglas, Ga., and was the youngest of nine children.  He graduated from high school in 1949 and was attending college in Atlanta when the Korean Conflict occurred. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for four years and was in the USAF Reserve for four more years.

During his assignment in Victoria, Texas John met Shirley and they were married for 63 years. He was a devoted husband always serving God and having a positive attitude toward life.  John was a loving and caring father, giving his children every opportunity to succeed and believed they could accomplish anything with work, dedication and encouragement from their family.

John was a member of the Country Church in Marion, Texas, at the time of his death. He served as an active deacon for many years in the churches wherever he lived. John was ordained a deacon in 1961 in Seadrift, Texas and served as Sunday School Superintendent, Training Union Director and on many committees and projects to serve his Lord throughout the years.

He served on the Calhoun County school board for eight years and strived to better the schools and community.  John and his father-in-law, K.B. Griffee, owned and operated a grocery store in Seadrift, for many years. During his working years John was a businessman, maintenance supervisor and rancher, always having a project planned and always helping others.

Even in retirement he worked part time at Pape Floors and Interiors in Seguin, enjoying the interaction with people.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Nov. 28, 2016, at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel at 11 a.m. with Rev. Neil Kibbe officiating.  Private interment will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the CIMA Hospice, 300 Landa St., New Braunfels, Texas, 78130 or to The Country Church, P.
