Josephine Hurst Williams Long, 94, went home to be with her Lord on Aug. 14, 2008.
Josie, as she was known to her family, was born in McMahan, Texas on Aug. 13, 1914 to John Roscoe and Norma McMahan Hurst. Josephine began her 37-year teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in McMahan, Texas, and taught in many small towns in Central Texas.
During World War II,

she left the teaching profession for a short time and worked as a censor for the war effort in San Antonio. The family moved to Seguin in 1954, where she taught fourth graders at F.C. Weinert Elementary School until her retirement in 1977.
Josephine attended the First Baptist Church of Seguin, where she was a member of the Faith Sunday School Class. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honor society of women educators, and Texas Retired Teachers Association.
Josephine moved to New Braunfels in 1999 to be nearer her devoted daughter and caregiver, Judy Kraft.
Josie was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Edd Williams and G.A. “Rusty” Long; brother, John Edward Hurst; step-son Kenneth Williams; and step-granddaughter Kelly Williams. She is survived by her son, John Thomas Cleveland and wife, Sandra, of Katy, Texas; daughter, Judy Kay Kraft and husband, Dennis, of New Braunfels; step-sons: Lamar Williams and wife, Yvonne, of Jacksboro, Texas, Larry Long and wife, Diane, of Harwood, Md., and Johnny Long of Snyder, Texas; daughter-in-law, Jean Williams of Mineola; grandchildren: Dennis Lynn Kraft, of New Braunfels, Jonnie Hawkins, of Katy, and Debra Zimmerman, of San Antonio; and step-grandchildren: Margie Hoeflein and Wesley Williams of Jacksboro, Kendra Harris, of Mineola, and Sam Williams, of Grapevine.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Oak Tree Assisted Living facility for their loving care of Josephine during her last six years, where she was known for her Skip-Bo ability and sweet smile. Also, heartfelt thanks to Dr. Mark Burns and Dr. Elizabeth Ritchey and their staff for the caring attention given to Josephine during her last years and to Hope Hospice for their support and guidance.
Visitation was held on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 1 – 7 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 -7 p.m. Graveside services and interment were held on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Jeffrey Cemetery in McMahan, Texas, with Rev. Hollie Briscoe, Josephine’s cousin, officiating.
Honoring the family as pallbearers were Larry Grigg, Dennis Haas, John Hawkins, Lynn Kraft, Ronnie Powell and Steve Zimmerman.
