JV Lady Lions defeat Lady Lobos 56-28

The Junior Varsity Lady Lions started 2009 by hosting their first district contest of the season. They hosted the Lehman Lady Lobos at the Lion’s Den on Friday, Jan. 2 and defeated them soundly with a final score of 56-28.

The Lady Lions took control of the game from the first quarter, scoring 15 points and allowing seven

from the Lady Lobos.

“Lockhart started strong from the beginning,” Coach LeAnn Sibley said. “They scored 15 first quarter points and leading the way was Katy Duda, who converted two free throws and Briana Ortiz, who converted a three-point play to go along with three rebounds.”

The Lady Lions continued their plan of attack and defensive play in the second quarter, scoring 18 points and allowing only two points from the Lady Lobos.

“Duda continued to dominate in quarter two,” Sibley said. “She scored 10 points while Shavonda Hill contributed four to help the team take a 33-9 lead into the locker room at halftime.”

After a halftime break, the Lady Lions came back to their lowest-scoring quarter in the third. They scored only eight points while the Lady Lobos had their best quarter with 12 points. The third ended at 41-21.

“Hill led the third period with four points,” Sibley said. “Gwen Sanders chipped in two along with four rebounds.”

The Lady Lions came back to finish strong in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 points while allowing only seven from Lehman and ending the game at 56-28.
Duda led the Lady Lion scoring with 18 points. Hill contributed 14, while Ortiz finished with eight. Shelby Kennedy scored five points while Gwen Sanders and Karla Stovall each scored four.

The Lady Lions traveled to Manor on Tuesday, Jan. 6 to face the Lady Mustangs and will host the San Marcos Lady Rattlers at the Lion’s Den gym on Friday, Jan. 9 starting at 5:30 p.m. Check next week’s Post-Register for scores and highlights.
