Lady Lion harriers sweep Moulton Invitational

The Lockhart Lady Lion Cross Country claimed first place at the Moulton Invitational on Saturday.

Competing in the large school division, the Lady Lions scored a perfect 15 points to claim the team title.

“The girls ran a tremendous race today,” Bayliss said. “I am so excited for our team. This is the first team victory for the girls’ varsity squad in five seasons

.

“If we were scored in the small school division, we would have defeated both Luling and Yoakum, two teams who we have not beaten the past several seasons.”

The Lady Lions were led by senior Olivia Smith and freshman Moira Salinas. This tandem crossed the finish line 1-2, both recording times of 13:28 for the two-mile course.

Senior Alex Lindsey was not far behind, finishing third with a time of 13:57.

Right on Lindsey’s heels and finishing in fourth place was junior Nessa Rios, in a time of 14:03. Junior Lauren Schuelke was the fifth runner to cross the finish line with 14:33 on the clock.

Senior Ali Colurciello finished in sixth place in a time of 15:08 and sophomore Gabby Escobedo came in seventh place with a time of 15:48.

In the junior varsity race, the Lady Lion squad finished in fourth place.

Junior Mariah McKnight led the way with a time of 16:51. Junior Sierra Steele was right behind McKnight, as she finished in a time of 16:53. Freshman Melanie Jones ran a time of 17:06. Sophomore Kaylah Rodriguez crossed the finish line in time of 18:20. Junior Xiomara Santiago finished in a time of 20:26 to place.

“These girls accomplished so much today,” Bayliss said. “I am so pleased with their races and how they competed.”

The Lady Lion cross country team will be traveling to the St. Andrews Invitational this Saturday in southwest Austin.
