The Lady Lions had a big week last week, soundly defeating their last non-district rival of the season, the Hendrickson Hawks, before handing a bitter defeat to the Lady Lobos and securing their place as a standout in this season of district play.

Lady Lions vs. Hendrickson
On Tuesday, March 9, the Lady Lion varsity softball team had a bye week from district pl

ay, but ordered up a non-district game against Pflugerville Henrickson.

The Lady Lions jumped out with a 2-0 lead in the second with Veronica Escobedo drawing a walk, followed by Morgan Rives who reached first on a single moving Lockhart into scoring position.

Third basemen Chelsea Capello, recovering from an injured hand, nailed the ball deep over the left fielder’s head for a double, scoring Escobedo and moving Rives to third.

Freshmen Mackinzee Griebel brought Rives home on a sacrifice fly to center field and giving the Lady Lions a 2-0 lead.

Lockhart continued to score in the third and fourth innings.

In the third, Taylor Rives sailed a standup triple to score Jamie Schulle, who had reached base with patience at the plate. Amanda Capello helped push another run across with a sacrifice fly to score Rives.

In the fourth, the Lady Lions continued to tally runs as Mikaela Flores reached base on an error, followed by a hit from Griebel. This allowed Brandy Stacks to load the bases with a single of her own. T. Rives then scored Flores and Griebel on her single and A. Capello hits another single to score Stacks for a 7-0 lead.

Schulle was in the circle for Lockhart, striking out four and relying on her solid defense to keep the Eagles from crossing home plate, although there was one miscue, which allowed Hendrickson to score.

The Lady Lions ended the game with a 7-1 win.

Stacks went 2-2 with a triple; A. Capello went 2-3 with a sacrifice fly; Escobedo was 1-3; M. Rives was 2-3; T. Rives was 2-2 with a triple; C. Capello went 1-3 with a double. Griebel was 1-1 with a sacrifice fly and Jarin Hazelett went 1-1.

Lady Lions vs. Lehman
Coming off a big win on Tuesday, the Lady Lion varsity softball team rolled into district competition with a match up against the Lehman Lobos.

Unlike other contests when the Lady Lions came into the game roaring, the Lobos were able to pick up two runs in the first innings, causing Lockhart’s squad to bear down and focus on every move they made.

According to coach Alisha Homann, “It took the ladies a few innings to get some runs as they were smoking the ball right to the Lehman defense. Lockhart had a tough time finding the holes, but eventually found success in the third through seventh innings.

J. Schulle started the rally for the Lady Lions with a screaming triple to score M. Griebel, who had reached base on a single. Momentum only built from there.

Lockhart was able to capitalize on defensive errors and burned the Lobos several times with the long ball.

In the circle, T. Rives was in her groove, striking out nine Lobos with plenty of confidence in her defense to have her back.

The Lady Lions wrapped up the victory with a 14-4 final score.

Offensive standouts were Schulle (2-5 with a double and a triple); T. Rives (3-5); A. Capello (2-5); Escobedo (3-5); M. Rives with a triple; C. Capello with a double; Kassie Gaddis (2-4 with a double); and Stacks with a single.

The Lady Lions opened the week of Spring Break at 2-0 in district play. They hosted the Manor Mustangs on Tuesday and will travel to San Marcos Friday to take on the Rattlers.
