The Varsity and Junior Varsity Lady Lions basketball teams hosted the Fredericksburg Lady Billies at the Lion’s Den on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
Both Lady Lion teams ended the night with losses. The Varsity team lost with a score of 65-34 while the Junior Varsity team lost 45-29.
The freshman team played at Adams Gym at the Fr

eshman Campus. The Freshman Lady Lions also lost. Their final score was 69-10.
The Varsity Lady Lions started out doing fine in the first quarter. They were able to score 11 points to the Lady Billies’ 15 points. Just two shots behind, the Lady Lions remained confident at the end of the quarter. Scoring in the first came mainly from senior Mariah Carter who scored a total of nine points with four two-point shots and a free throw. The other two points came from Amanda Alvarez who earned them making one two-point basket. The first ended at 15-11.
The second quarter was the lowest scoring quarter for the Lady Lions. Lockhart scored only five points, while Fredericksburg took a 12-point lead. Scoring for the Lions in the second quarter were Shelby Henrichs with a two-point shot, Alvarez with a free throw and Carter with a two-pointer. The second quarter turned the momentum over to the Lady Billies, who took advantage of the shift and never looked back. The quarter ended at 28-16.
After halftime, the Lady Billies came out and scored twice as many points as the Lady Lions in the third quarter. Fredericksburg scored a total of 16 points while only allowing eight points from Lockhart. Again, most of the scoring for the Lady Lions was done by Carter, who made three free throws and a pair of two-pointers for a total of seven points. Alicia Officer made her contribution with a free throw. The third ended at 44-24.
The final quarter in the game had the Lady Billies continuing to outscore the Lady Lions 2-1. Lockhart scored 10 additional points but could not keep the Lady Billies from scoring 21 final points. Scoring for the Lady Lions were Tori Hill with a free throw and a two-point shot for a total of three points. Vanessa Gonzales also made a free throw and a two-pointer for three points total. Kariah Selby made her contribution to the game with a two-point shot. Finally, Carter ended her scoring with a couple of free throws for a grand total of 20 points in the game. The game ended at 65-34.
The Junior Varsity Lady Lions started their match-up by being outscored 14-3 in the first quarter. Fredericksburg just dominated Lockhart and the deficit did not reach less than 10 points for the remainder of the game.
“Their pressure defense and all the offensive turnovers really killed us in the first quarter,” Coach Brian Suiter said.
Despite some bright spots and effective plays by the Lady Lions, the game’s outcome was never in doubt. Every time Lockhart got within 12 points, the Fredericksburg defense worked harder to widen their lead with steals and easy lay-ups.
“There at the end of the game we were beginning to run our offense effectively,” Suiter said. “But, we could not keep the momentum for long enough to get close.”
Lockhart fell to Fredericksburg because of too many turnovers – 30 to be exact. Andrea McKinney led the scoring for the Lady Lions with a total of seven points. Following closely behind McKinney was Desi Winn with six points. The JV game ended with a score of 45-29.
The Freshman Lady Lions hosted the Fredericksburg’s Freshman Lady Billies at the old Adams Gym at the Freshman Campus, and according to Coach Dave Johnston “the battling Billies came out of the gate hot and took a commanding lead over the Lady Lions.”
The Lady Lions competed very hard, but Fredericksburg kept control of the ball and the game throughout and ultimately won 69-10.
“Fredericksburg had a tremendous press,” Johnston said. “They utilized their quickness and their height. I’m very proud of the girls. We are improving each day and they continue to have great attitudes.”
The Freshman Lady Lions were led in scoring by Emily Nairn with five points. Nairn hit two jumpers from the elbow and added a free throw. Other scorers were Alyson Baltierra, Samantha Duncan and Karla Stoval.
The Lady Lions faced Cuero on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Check out next week’s paper for game results and highlights.
See you at the game.
