The Lockhart Lady Lions hosted the Elgin Lady Wildcats during a double-header game night on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
All three Lady Lion basketball teams had a tough time getting a good game going before the Thanksgiving break. By the end of the night all three teams had fallen to Elgin.
The Varsity Lady Lions lost 62-44. The J

unior Varsity Lady Lions lost 32-28 and the Freshman Lady Lions lost 49-14.
The Varsity Lady Lions fought hard during each quarter, but never got out from under the Lady Wildcats’ lead. Every time the Lady Lions scored a couple of points, the Lady Wildcats would answer with at least the same shots or more. The final score for the Varsity team was 62-24.
The Junior Varsity Lady Lions lost their game by four points. The first two quarters were also partially responsible for the loss. Only three points were scored in the first quarter and just five points were scored in the second quarter. The JV Lady Wildcats, on the other hand, scored seven points in the first and six in the second for a halftime score of 13-8.
The Lady Lions came back strong in the third quarter scoring a total of 13 points while only allowing seven points from the Lady Wildcats ending the third quarter with Lockhart in the lead at 21-20.
Unfortunately, the Lady Wildcats returned the favor in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 points and allowing only seven points from the Lady Lions for a final score of 32-28.
Leading the scoring for the JV Lady Lions was Andrea McKinney with a total of nine points. McKinney made three out of four free throws and three two-point shots. Jocelyn Coleman made three two-point shots for a total of six points. Jesi Greer made a three-point shot and a two-point shot for a total of five points. Leslie Jacobs and Victoria Aguilar each made a two-point shot. Kaela Amirkabirian made two free throw shots. Cortney Ferris and Desi Winn each made a free throw shot.
The freshman team lost their game by the biggest margin despite their best efforts. The freshman Lady Wildcats were all over the court.
“The Lady Cats were hot from the field,” Coach Dave Johnston said. “I thought we did some good things tonight. We ran our zone offense better and got some good looks.
Freshman Lady Lions scoring on Tuesday night were Alyson Baltierra, Samantha Duncan, Whitney Brawley and Karla Stovall. Brawley and Duncan shot two for two from the free throw line giving the Lady Lions a total of four out of six points from the free throw line.
The freshman team also saw action from Nicole Matteson, Alysia Peralez, Shanice Nino Ashley Harper, Gwen Sanders and Emily Nairn.
“We are recognizing some things in game situations that we have talked about during practice,” Johnston said. “I really like this group of basketball players. They work hard, they are eager to learn and they are a fun group.”
Like new yearlings trying to get their footing, the freshman team will continue to grow and improve as the season progresses. Their positive attitude and hard work as a team will guarantee success.
See you at the game.
