LHS baseball defeated by Hawks

The Lockhart Lion varsity baseball team hosted Pflugerville Henderickson”s Hawks on Friday, April 29, for their last game of the season.
The Hawks made an early jump on the scoreboard in the first inning where the Lions could never recover giving them a 12-9 victory over Lockhart.
For the next three innings, the Lions matched the Hawks run-for-run. However, in t

he fifth inning, the Hawks kept the Lions scoreless while making five runs themselves.
Trailing 12-5, Lockhart stepped up their game in the last two innings. They kept Hendrickson scoreless, but could only add four more runs to the scoreboard. By the end of the seventh inning, the Lions last four runs wasn”t enough against the Hawks 12 runs making the final score 12-9.
Contributing to the Lions score were Michael Schulle and Justin Garcia with doubles.
Pitching for Lockhart was Clay Ohlendorf for the first three innings, Schulle for the fourth inning and Steve Gonzales for last three innings.
The Lions finished the season with a 9-12 overall record and a 4-8 district record.
Over the 21-game season, the Lions made 167 team hits. Michael Wright proved to be a threat behind the plate with a 0.508 batting average and 33 total hits. Wes Selman made 22 hits with a 0.373 batting average. Both Andrew Capello and Garcia made 18 hits each with Garcia having a 0.346 batting average and Capello having a 0.340 batting average.
Besides the high batting average, Wright also made 20 runs for the Lions over the season. Ohlendorf and Selman contributed 12 runs to the Lions 103 run total.
“We had a rough finish to an overall good season,” Coach Randy Schaefer said. “We were competitive with three of the top 10 teams in the state with a win over Wichita Falls-Rider.”
