Lillian Pope Rice passed away on April 22, 2013 at the age of 96. She was born to Fay Callihan Pope and Willie I. Pope on June 27, 1916, in Lockhart, Texas.

She was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, Martin Curry; her second husband, Paul Rice; her brothers, Ben Delwin Pope, Wilbur Alton Pope and Willie H. Pope; and her niece, Katherine Elizabeth Pope.

Lillian

graduated from Lockhart High School in 1934. She began her college education at Southwest Texas State Teachers College (Texas State University). After her marriage to Martin Curry she and Martin moved to McAllen, Texas, where she began a long association with the McAllen public schools as a registrar, teacher and counselor. During this time she received her bachelor’s degree from Pan American College, and her Master of Science degree from Texas A&I.

Ten years after Martin”s death in 1955, she married Paul Rice. Following their retirement she and Paul moved to Lockhart where they were active members of First Lockhart Baptist Church. In 1998, Paul passed away and Lillian continued to serve at the church, where she was involved in many activities including helping with the Wednesday Night Supper Ministry and was a devoted member of the Friendship Sunday School Class.

Lillian”s faith was very much a part of who she was and she lived her Christian beliefs each day of her life.

Lillian is survived by her stepson, Bob Rice and his wife, Lou; grandchildren, Curt and Gail; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty Pope; and many nieces and nephews.

Lillian”s family would like to thank Dr. Charles Laurence, Dr. Steven Minor, and Josh, Christi, Judy and Gary Rodgers for their loving care and compassion.

Services were held on Saturday, April 27 at First Lockhart Baptist Church with internment at Lockhart City Cemetery.
