Lion baseball dominates Hendrickson

Varsity vs. Hendrickson
The Lockhart Lion varsity baseball team traveled to Pflugerville for a victorious last district game, 3-1, against the Hendrickson Hawks on Friday, April 28.
Defensively, leading the Lions on the mound was Steve Gonzales with Steven Crider catching. Gonzales allowed only one run on two hits striking out seven and walking only one Hendric

kson batter.
“Steve Gonzales pitched another great game,” Coach Gifford Whitehead said. “Defensively the team played extremely well. They had only one error on the night.”
Also displaying defensive skills were Landon Buckner, Aaron Torres, and Josh Hazelett. The trio completed a critical double play in the sixth inning to give Lockhart the momentum to finish the game.
Offensively, Michael Wright started the game with a leadoff triple on the first pitch. He later scored the first run of the game as Gonzales drove him in on a single hit to left field.
Wright also scored the second run of the game for Lockhart in the fifth inning as he reached base on a single hit up the middle. Aaron Torres moved him to second with another single up the middle, and Gonzales knocked in his second run of the game on a fielder”s choice to second base.
The third run came in the sixth inning with two outs. Josh Hazelett completed a single hit to left field. Chris Dietz reached base on an error from second. Wright then doubled down the left field line scoring Gabriel Amaya who was pinch running for Hazelett.
The Lions ended their district play with a 7-5 record and an 11-14 overall record.

Junior Varsity vs. Hendrickson
The Lockhart Lion junior varsity baseball team played their last game of the season against the Hendrickson Hawks on Monday, April 24, with a home field advantage.
Both district opponents fought hard over a tight scoring game; however, the Hawks walked away with the victory, 4-3, over the Lions.
Leading Lockhart”s defense was James Mendez on the mound and Aubry Voigt catching. Mendez had four runs score off of six hits, one walk, and nine strikeouts. The Lions also committed four errors giving the Hawks an offensive edge.
Offensively, the Lions scored three runs on eight hits with Hendrickson committing three errors.
KC Butler was one for three at bat with a run scored, Jordan Delgado was two for two at bat with a run scored, Kody Skelton was two for four at bat with two RBI doubles, James Mendez was one for three at bat with a run scored, Aubry Voigt was two for three at bat, Kurt Koehler was one for three at bat with a RBI double, and Clayton Shafer was one for three at bat.

Freshman vs. Hendrickson
The Lockhart Lion freshman baseball team wrapped up their season with a win over the Hendrickson Hawks, 4-1, last Monday, April 24.
They ended their season with a second place finish in district behind the Hawks. The Hawks led the district with a 10-1 record getting their only defeat from the Lions. The Lions trailed closely behind with a 9-2 district record and a 19-7 overall record. The Taylor Ducks came in third place with a 7-3 district record.
“These guys did a wonderful job this year,” Coach Mark Elder said. “There are some high expectations for these guys in the years to come. Congratulations on a great season.”
The Lions played a solid defensive game against the Hawks only committing one error. Pitching seven innings for Lockhart was Jacob Castillo. He allowed one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts and two bases on walks.
Offensively, Lockhart had a strong game at bat as Travis Linder led with a double and three RBIs. Castillo went to the plate with one in three successful bats and two runs scored. Adam Renteria also went one for three at bat with a run scored. John Alvarez completed a double with one for three at bat.
“I would like to congratulate the freshman on a wonderful season,” said Head Coach Richard Vasquez. “I would also like to thank the Booster Club and Fans for all their support throughout the year.”
