Lion baseball struggles with district opponent

Varsity
The Lockhart Lion varsity baseball team traveled to Vista Ridge High School for disappointing district loss, 5-1, against the Rangers on Thursday, April 13.
“Offensively, we had a rough night,” Coach Gifford Whitehead said.
The Lions earned their lone run on two hits completed by Josh Hazelett in the fifth inning and Dennis Ortiz in the sixth inning

Landon Buckner scored Lockhart”s only run in the fifth inning. After reaching first base on an error, Buckner was advanced on base by a line drive hit made by Hazelett. Michael Wright brought Buckner home with a ground ball to the shortstop. Wright”s speed earned him first base as he beat the throw.
Starting pitcher Michael Schulle and catcher Dennis Ortiz led the Lions on defense.
“Defensively, we had a few errors in the field that hurt. Schulle did not have his best performance but he pitched well,” Coach Whitehead added.
Schulle allowed five runs on eight hits with only two of the runs earned. He also had five strikeouts and two walks.
The loss now makes the Lions 5-3 in district. Their next game is at home against the Del Valle Cardinals on Friday, April 21.

Junior Varsity
The Lockhart Lion junior varsity baseball team met the Connally Cougars on the road for a double-header match on Monday, April 10.
In game one, Lockhart swept Connally aside with a 10-8 victory.
Offensively, the Lions scored their 10 runs on 13 hits. KC Butler hit two out of three earning two runs; Kody Skelton scored one run; James Mendez completed one out of four hits earning three RBIs and a double; Joe Fuentes completed two out of three hits including a RBI, double and single; Brandon Moreno earned an RBI; Aubrey Voigt completed two out of three hits earning two runs scored; Paul Buckner scored one run; AJ Crider completed two out of two hits earning one run; Jordan Delgado completed one out of two hits earning a RBI and double; Kurt Koehler completed one hit earning a RBI, single and one run scored; and Marcos Officer completed two hits earning a RBI.
In game two, the Lions suffered a loss, 5-1, to the Cougars.
Offensively, the Lions scored their only run on three hits coming from Fuentes, Officer, and Voigt.

Freshman
The Lockhart Lion freshman baseball team hosted the Connally Cougars for a double-header on Monday, April 10.
The Lions were victorious in both games against the Cougars with a 16-0 shut out and a 20-4 sweep. Pitching for the Lions was Jacob Castillo in game one and Ricky Rodriguez in game two.
