8th Grade “B”
Once again, the 8th grade Lady Lions’ “B” team dominated their opponent, demolishing the Barton Bobcats, 43-21, on Thursday, Feb. 3.
The Lady Lions started strong, as Vanessa Gonzales took the opening tip down for a layup and was fouled. Although she missed the free throw, the opening play set the tone for what would become a blow-out.
Shelby Ohlendorf led the team during the first quarter with four points. Heather Schulle chipped in with two first-quarter points and three rebounds. The Lady Lions finished the quarter with an 8-5 advantage.
Lockhart had a strong second quarter scoring 14 total team points, led by Britney Johnson with six points. Johnson also had a tremendous game on the boards, pulling in a game high 11 rebounds. Heather Domel chipped in with four second-quarter points, and the Lady Lions led at halftime, 22-13.
The team struggled in the third period, managing only six total points. However, strong defense allowed them to maintain a comfortable lead, as the Lady Lions held Barton to a single point. Ohlendorf led the scoring in the third with a beautiful coast-to-coast left handed lay-up. Shelby Henrichs chipped in with two points and two assists in the quarter.
In the final period, the Lady Lions came out in full force, creating numerous Barton turnovers with hard-nosed, man-to-man defense. Youlee Merida converted a three point play, as she was fouled on a lay-up. Once again, Domel was the fourth quarter hero, as she sank four perimeter shots, scoring eight fourth quarter points. She finished with a game high 12 points.
“The girls are playing much like an “A” team, and there isn’t a “B” team in the area who could beat them right now,” said Coach LeAnn Sibley.
