Cinco de Mayo lights up weekend

The Greater Caldwell County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the City of Lockhart will host a celebration of Cinco de Mayo on the Courthouse Square on Friday, April 30, and Saturday, May 1.

A celebration of Mexican heritage, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army”s defeat of French soldiers in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

elebration kicks off on Friday evening with the opening of a variety of food, arts and crafts booths and carnival rides for children at 6 p.m. Music throughout the evening will be provided by DJ Jesse Cruz – “Jammin” Express.”

Later, Marcos Orozco will provide live music until midnight.

On Saturday, the booths will reopen at noon, with a variety of entertainment throughout the day.

The Ruiz Dance Studio will provide a ballet folklorico performance from 6 – 7 p.m., followed by local mariachi performers Mariachi Sol y Luna (Nicole Reyes and Robert Andrew Sanchez) from 7 – 8 p.m.

Lobo IV will appear at a live music dance from 8:30 p.m. – 1 a.m.

In addition to the festivities on the Courthouse Square, the first annual Cinco de Mayo Co-Ed softball tournament will be held at the City Park Softball Fields beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Spectators are invited to cheer on teams from all over Lockhart and across Central Texas while enjoying what promises to be perfect ballgame weather.

As they have in past years, the Friends of the Dr. Eugene Clark Library will participate in the Cinco de Mayo action, as they host their annual book sale on the lawn of the historic Dr. Eugene Clark Library, just south of the Cinco de Mayo festivities on Main Street.
