A two vehicle crash in Maxwell claimed the life of a Lockhart man and snarled commuter traffic for several hours on Friday morning.
Lockhart resident Michael Torres, 33, was killed when his 2003 Kia was struck on the driver’s side by a westbound 2000 Ford Ranger. According to DPS Trooper Darrel Germany, Torres was on h

is way home from work via Railroad Street in Maxwell when he drove through the stop sign at the intersection of Railroad Street and 142 and into oncoming traffic.
The driver of the Ford Ranger could not take evasive action in time to avoid the collision, Germany said. The Trooper declined to identify the driver, suggesting protection of the man’s privacy. He was not seriously injured and did not require EMS transport away from the scene.
Highway 142 between Lockhart and Martindale has become a dangerous stretch of road in recent years, with several serious accidents and at least two other fatalities having occurred in the last year.
