Police Department names new chief

After an exhaustive search and interview panel process, the City of Lockhart recently announced that the position of Police Chief has been accepted by Michael Lummus, who has a total of 32 years of law enforcement experience. Lummus retired from the City of Austin Police Department after 27 years, having last served as Supervisor over the Intelligence and Violent Offenders F

BI Task Force. He then worked for a brief time as Chief Deputy of the Williamson County Sheriff”s Office in Georgetown, Texas, and has most recently worked as Chief of Police in Bartlett, Texas, a position he has held since August 2004.
He is currently working on his occupational degree (which will credit him for his many years of experience in the law enforcement field), a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences Degree at the Temple, Texas College, and will be transferring to Texas State University in San Marcos to finish his degree as he takes up residence in Lockhart to assume his duties as Police Chief. Lummus plans on attending evening classes year-round and hopes to complete his degree in 2008.
He is the past vice president of the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, and the past vice president and past president of the Austin Police Association. He is certified as a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) Master Peace Officer and TCLEOSE Instructor, and comes highly recommended by respected professionals in the law enforcement field.
A total of 31 applications for the position were received. Eleven of those received a written interview exam that further narrowed the field to five, each of whom were interviewed by a panel consisting of Interim Chief of Police Ray Sanders, Austin Assistant Police Chief Kathy Ellison, Scott Huckabee, the criminal justice director of the Capital Area Planning Council of Governments (CAPCOG), Jack Ryle, the past executive director of the Texas Police Association, Paul Rodriguez from the U.S. Probation Office and Lockhart City Manager Clovia English.
“All five candidates were very good and it was a tough decision, but the panel unanimously agreed, as did I, that Mr. Lummus was an excellent choice,” English said in a written statement released recently.
Lummus toured the Lockhart Police Department facility and city prior to the interviews, and now expresses his excitement and honor of being selected by such a wonderful city and professional force as that of Lockhart.
He is tentatively scheduled to begin his new duties as Lockhart Chief of Police on Monday, April 3, 2006.
