Mack Farrel
Harold “Mack” Farrel, who had tired of reading his friends and family”s obituaries,
wanted it to be known that he died at age 70 as a result of pancreatic cancer. According to Mack, that should answer everyone”s question about, “What happened to Mack?”
Mack”s personal and unique style of life was to love everyone in his life as much as he could to the very end, and
to tell you “how it is,” until the very end of his life. He was an honest man!
Mack married a young woman, Jean Rogers, on July 10, 1967 in Austin, Texas. Mack and Jean had a special relationship. She put up with him and all his hobbies from race cars to guns. Their bond was unique, caring and loving. Jean was his “angel” during his final days. She never left his side and cared for him under all circumstances.
Now, comes their little buddle of joy – Samuel Mack Farrel on July 31, 1968. Sam was born in Germany when Mack was in the United States Army. Now, Mack had someone to drag around from racing venue to shooting events with him. Sam and his wife, Edie, gave Mack and Jean their only wonderful grandchild, Karen.
Born and raised an “Okie” to Veechel and Edward Farrel, Mack was Texan through and through. He always cherished his Oklahoma roots, but Texas was his home for more than 50 years.
His other cherished “someone” was his little brother, Eddie Farrel. From the time Eddie was born until Mack”s death, they never had a cross word. Mack would go to the drive-in movie with Eddie in trunk (“Mack, is your little brother in the trunk again?”) he taught Eddie how to shoot, fish, hunt, love, appreciate life, and how to be an outstanding example of manhood until he passed. What a great Big Brother!
Mack had sister-in-laws he considered “my sisters” which confused everyone. Carol, Judy, Nancy, and Molly were all special “gals” to Mack. Each of them had a special place in Mack”s life and he loved each one.
Life is funny, curious, cruel, delicious, and adventurous. Mack never met a child he did not love. Nieces and nephews include: Brenda, Kevin, Amy, Christopher, Casey, Kathy, Trey and Kelley. Great-nieces and nephews include: Leslie, Madison, Annabelle and Wesley. To list all the “kids” that shared his love would take more space than the newspaper can offer. But, as Mack would say, “you know who you are, and I love you. Now, go do something with your life”.
Mack died at home with his family around him the early hours of June 11, 2014. A gathering of friends and loved ones was held at Agarita Ranch the evening before the funeral services, from 4 – 8 p.m. Eeds Funeral Home held hold visitation one hour before the services, which began at 10 a.m., June 16, 2014 with Christopher Carpenter officiating.
Serving as the pallbearers were: Kevin Johnson, Chuck Leshikar, Trey Tucker, Roy David, Red Hyman and Jake Jones. Serving as the honorary pallbearers were Andy Kuhn, Chris Carpenter, Casey Carpenter, Karen Zielger, Lance Self and Wesley Johnson. Burial will be in a Texas historical cemetery along with other Texas heroes in Center Point, Texas at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 16, following his services in Lockhart.
