Bill Douglas “Doug” Buckner passed away on Jan. 2, 2014, at the age of 85. Doug was born on July 29, 1928, to Donie Blunt and Edith Shirley Buckner in Red Rock, Texas.
Doug was baptized at the Lockhart Church of Christ in 1952. On Nov. 26, 1952, he married Dorothy Marie Schaefer at Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Yoakum, and they then made their home in Lockhart.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Donie and Edith Buckner, and two brothers, Shirley Buckner and James Buckner.
Doug is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy; sister, Wyonda Johnson, of Elgin; brother, Fred Buckner, of Fort Worth; son, Billy Ray Buckner and wife, Karen; daughter, Debbie Pfefferkorn and husband, Ray; and son, John Buckner and wife, Joyce, all of Lockhart; grandchildren: Paul Buckner, Landon Buckner and wife, Emily, Alex Pfefferkorn, Karoline Pfefferkorn, Chad Grantham and wife, Mary, Cole Grantham, Amber Fletcher and husband, Mike, and Todd Goucher and wife, Kayla; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doug completed 35 years of employment with the Lower Colorado River Authority. He began as a Patrolman’s helper and became District Operations Superintendent before retiring.
Doug retired from the National Guard after having served for more than 20 years.
Doug was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church of Lockhart with positions held as Past President of Grace Lutheran Church Council and grounds keeper for a number of years. He was also a past member of the Grace Lutheran PreSchool Board.
Doug was a member of the Lockhart Volunteer Fire Department for 45 years and held the office of Volunteer Chief for 11 years. He was also Past President and Life Member of Guadalupe Firemen and Fire Marshals Association.
Doug was also a member of the following organizations: Lockhart Hermann Sons Lodge 64; American Legion Post 41; Lockhart Chamber of Commerce; a 50 year member of the Lockhart Masonic Lodge 690; Caldwell County Historical Commission; and Lavaca County Wildlife Management Association.
Doug was selected as Lockhart’s Most Worthy Citizen in 1982 and he served on the Lockhart City Council from 1996 through 2004.
Doug loved spending time at the family ranch near Yoakum where he enjoyed deer hunting and closely monitoring the rain gauge, but his greatest love was to spend time with his family wherever that might be.
Visitation was at McCurdy Funeral Home in Lockhart on Saturday, Jan. 4 from 6 – 8 p.m. Services were at Grace Lutheran Church in Lockhart on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. Burial followed at Lockhart City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Paul Buckner, Landon Buckner, Alex Pfefferkorn, Karoline Pfefferkorn, Chad Grantham and Buddy Pearson.
The family suggests memorials to Grace Lutheran Church of Lockhart.
