Cruz (Vasquez) Mendez, 81, of Lockhart, was born to Pauline Robles and Jose Vasquez on May 3, 1935, in Prairie Lea, Texas. Cruz passed away peacefully on June 4, 2016 in Kyle, Texas, with her loving family at her side.
She worked most of her life at the Lockhart Hospital as a nurse for Dr. Connally and various nursing homes in the area. She was one of the first Medication Aide

s to be certified.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Bertha Mendez; sister, Irene Vasquez Garcia; and her brother, Bruno Vasquez.
She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Fernando Enrique Mendez; her six children: Fernando Jr., and wife, Janey, of Lockhart, Joe Mendez, Sr., of Oklahoma City, Richard Mendez and wife, Dolores, Michael Mendez and wife, Sonia, and James Mendez, Sr., and wife, Nona, all of Lockhart; her daughter, Betty Mendez, of Lockhart; seventeen grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and one great-great grandchild and one on the way. She also leaves behind her faithful companion, her puppy, Daisy.
A private viewing for the family was held on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 from 3 – 5 p.m. with visitation following for family and friends from 5 – 7 p.m. The recitation of the Rosary was held at 7 p.m. The mass of celebration was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, with Father Edward Karasek officiating. Burial services followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
