Miss Dora Lee Smith, 85, of Lockhart, passed away peacefully at her home on May 15, 2009. Dora was born in Caldwell County, the oldest of three children, born to the union of Ferry and Leona Spears Smith.

She received a Bachelor of Science from Tillotson College in 1947 and a master’s degree from Prairie View A&M in 1956. She taught Home Economics, English an

d Special Education for a total of 35 years. Dora taught at Lockhart Vocational/Carver High School before integration and Lockhart ISD after integration.

Dora was a faithful member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. She served as a church secretary, lay leader, worship leader, lay delegate, church musician and on many other committees. Dora enjoyed community activities such as the Lockhart Community Choir. She took many community education classes such as: painting, ceramics, guitar, computer and swimming.

She was a long time member of the Heroines of Jericho and a member of the Caldwell County Retired Teachers Association.

Dora was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Grant Smith.

She leaves to mourn three aunts; Estella Kitchen, of Corpus Christi, Ozella Luckey, of Seguin, and Rosetta Scott, of San Antonio; one sister, Inita M. Smith, of Lockhart; one nephew, John H. Smith and wife, Ouida, of Round Rock; and a host of relatives, friends and former students.

A visitation was held at Eeds Funeral Home Chapel from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2009. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, May 23 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church with Reverend Foster Roberts officiating. Serving as the pallbearers were family and friends. Serving as the honorary pallbearers were the Heroines of Jericho and the Caldwell County Retired Teachers Association.
