Dr. Ilene Brown, 97, of West Knoxville, Tenn., died Friday, June 20, 2008 at her home.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Knoxville.
Ilene was born in McMahan, Texas on Oct.12, 1910, to the late James J. Brown and Mary (Molly) Jeffrey Brown. She graduated from Lockhart High School in 1928.
Ilene received her B.S. degree in 1936 and her M.S. in 1941

from the University of Texas, in Austin. She received her Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1952.
After several years of high school teaching, she worked for seven years in East Texas as a member of the Texas State Home Economics Supervisory Staff.
Ilene was Associate Professor of Home Economics at Southwest Texas State College (now Texas State University – San Marcos). She then gained an appointment to the University of Tennessee, located in Knoxville.
Ilene served six years as an Associate Professor and 17 years a Professor. During a leave of absence from 1967-1969, she served as a visiting Professor at the University of Utah and participated in US AID/Ethiopia Teacher Education Project at Haile Seliassie I University in Ethiopia.
Following her retirement in 1976, she spent four years in Honduras as a co-worker with their National Supervisor of Home Economics. Ilene was also visiting Professor at the University of Northern Iowa, University of Utah, Oklahoma State University and Louisiana State University. She served as a consultant for the Chattanooga City Schools and the University of Vermont. Ilene conducted numerous research projects and had numerous publications to her credit. She held memberships in many organizations, and remained active as long as her health permitted. Ilene was also preceded in death by her brothers; Jesse Thomas Brown of Philadelphia, Pa., and Orval Allen Brown and sister-in-law Winnie Harris Brown of Baytown, Texas. She is survived by many cousins. Funeral Service was held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 23, at the First Baptist Church of Knoxville with Dr. William D. Shiell and Reverend Dave Ward officiating. Following the service in Knoxville, Graveside services were held at 10:00 a.m., June 25th, at the Jeffrey Cemetery with Vance Rodgers officiating.
