J.L. Manning was born on March 6, 1934, in Downsville, La., to the late Garlus and Annie Brown Manning. He accepted Christ at an early age at Lanes Chapel Baptist Church in Downsville, La. He rededicated his life to Christ in his mid-twenties and upon moving to Lockhart, Texas, with his family, he became a member of First Baptist Church.

On July 14, 1956, J.L. Manning

was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Taylor Manning. To this union of 54 years, eight children were conceived. He leaves behind to treasure his memories his loving and devoted wife, Shirley Manning; two sons, Reverend Steve (Janiece) Manning, of Austin, Texas, and Carey (Yevett) Manning, of Lockhart; four daughters: Sandra Manning-Jennings and Wanda Head, both of Round Rock, Texas, Tammy (Phillip) Brite, of Lockhart, and Kimberly (Cleveland) Coleman, of Lockhart.

He also leaves behind to cherish his memories 12 grandchildren: Matthew and Denise Manning, Cassondra and Jonathan “JB” Head, Jr. (Cassandra); Taylor, Lawrence and Victoria Brite; SaCora and Shanice Manning; and Jocelyn, Danzie and Jamayla Coleman. His blessings kept flowing with four great-grandchildren, Jeramiah, Izaiah and Tamera McQuiage and Audrielle Head, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by one son, Danzie O’Dell Manning; one unborn child; his parents; five brothers; and three sisters.

Services were held at the First Baptist Church in Lockhart, Texas, on Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Flemings officiating. Interment followed at the Lockhart City Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were: Phillip Brite, Cleveland Coleman, Matthew Manning, Jonathan “J.B.”Head, Jr., Lawrence Brite and Edward Taylor, Jr.; Serving as honorary pallbearers were: Steve Manning, Carey Manning, Danzie Coleman, Edward Taylor, Sr., Joe C. Jennings, Jonathan Head, Sr., and Butch Franks.
