Lela Bernice Chambliss

Lela Bernice Chambliss, 90 of Corpus Christi, Texas passed away Monday, March 15, 2004. She was born on July 28, 1913, in Lytton Springs, Caldwell County, Lockhart, Texas, to John B. and Bessie Kelley of Lockhart. She was married to Jim Chambliss in the First Baptist Church of Lockhart on April 4, 1931.

Lela lived in the Petronial area

and served as Tax Assessor/Collector for several years. She worked for twenty years as secretary for the Petronila School. She retired and moved to Lockhart in 1975. She was a member of the Baptist Church and will be dearly missed by all. She was known as “Memama” to her precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid seamstress, gardener and quilt maker.

She is preceded in death by her husband of sixty-five years, Jim Chambliss; her son Douglas Ray (5 years old); two grandsons, Larry Thomas Sebring and Jimmy Spencer Chambliss; two sisters and three brothers.

She is survived and loved by four children, Gerry (Bill) Sebring of Tucson, Arizona, Lucille (Virgil) Hurst of Corpus Christi, Ron (Evelyn) Chambliss of Montrose, Colorado and David (Barabara) Chambliss of Lockhart. Also, survived and dearly loved by six grandsons, Ray, Rob, Phillip, Ronnie Joe, Jay and Cody; four granddaughters, Lynda Sue, Rhonda Gaye, Kelly Ann and Mikki Diane; eight great-grandsons, Thomas P., Ryan, Taylor T., Douglas Ray, Justin Wayne, Jonathan Craig, Ryan Jamison, Noah David; fifteen great-granddaughters, Sarah Ann, Alexis Renee, Aleaha M., Ashley Rae, Lyndsee Rae, Courtney Christine, Jillian Elise, Krista Danea, Rikki Lanea, Lauren Nicole, Margaret Ellen, Elizabeth Ann, Ashten Rose, Camas Ray, and Grace Elaine.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9:00a.m., Wednesday, March 17, 2004, in Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will be conducted at 3:00p.m. in Bunton Cemetery at Dale, Texas.
