Lewis Frederick Preston, MD, 89, of Oak Ridge. Tenn., died Friday, March 24, 2006 at NHC Healthcare in Farragut. Dr. Preston was born Sept. 2, 1916 in Austin, Texas. He grew up and graduated from high school in Lockhart.
He received his pre-med education at the University of Texas at Austin, and then received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houst

on in 1939.
Dr. Preston spent two years with the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and was sent to Oak Ridge as one of the first doctors assigned to participate in the secretive Manhattan Project.
In 1959, he founded and built Children”s Clinic where he practiced until he sold it a decade later. In 1986, he organized Oak Ridge Pediatric Clinic.
His civic activities included Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, President 1963. Oak Ridge Industrial Development Board 1968-1971. Melton Hill Regional Industrial Organization, Clinton, Charter member and Director. Oak Ridge Rotary Club and Anderson County Board of Zoning, Clinton, 1961-1964.
He was a member of Roane County Medical Society, Tennessee State Medical Association, American Medical Society, American Board of Pediatrics, certified in 1952, and American Academy of Pediatrics.
Since its founding, he was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. He loved the church and was a very active member, service twice on the Vestry.
In 2000 he was honored as Senior Pediatrician of the Year, Tennessee Chapter, American Academy of Pediatricians Tennessee Pediatric Society. He was recognized for more than 50 years of service to Tennessee children.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Sue, and his brother Walter.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Preston; seven children: SuAnn Vandevelde and husband, Russ of Birmingham, Ala., Marilyn Danielson and husband, Myron of Lebanon, Tenn., Mary Lewis Preston of Atlanta, Nancy Jane Curtright and husband, David of Knoxville, Tenn., Lewis Frederick Preston, II and wife, Janice of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Deborah Ellen Clary and husband, Tom of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and John Courtenay Preston and wife, Jan of Knoxville, Tenn.; twin sister Frances Brady of Austin; stepdaughter Jody Warren and husband Bill of San Diego, Calif., and their son Stewart; grandchildren Russell Vandevelde, Ann Tabor, Beau, Pat and Matthew Kelly, Rives and Walter Cutright, Derick Preston, and Courtenay, Christopher and Caitilin Clary; ten great-grandchildren and five nieces.
The family received friends on Monday, March 27, 2006 from 9 – 11 a.m. at St. Stephen”s Episcopal Church. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 27, 2006 at St. Stephen”s Episcopal Church with Rev. Craig Kallio and Rev. David Hackett officiating. A private interment was held at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers were Maurice Woods, Robert Fox, Earl Eversole, Al Diddle, Lloyd Davis and Bob Irwin.
