Melvin Roy Cunningham, born in Lamar County, Texas, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2010, at the age of 86. He was born on Jan. 27, 1924, to Joe Lyle and Ida Mae (Waters) Cunningham.

Melvin served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Philippines and Japan. He was an auto mechanic for many years in Houston, Texas, until he moved to Red Rock to help his in-laws Thomas

and Essie Jones. He became a farmer and rancher and also volunteered with the McMahan Volunteer Fire Department, which he enjoyed very much. He loved to hunt, fish, camp out, play dominoes and travel. He enjoyed country music and old gospel songs. He particularly loved little children and called the girls little boys. He hugged all his nurses if they would let him and joked and cut up with everyone. He was a Methodist and a member of the First Methodist Church in Lockhart and Montgomery United Methodist Church in Montgomery. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #41.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Billy Roy Cunningham; brothers: John, James, Lloyd, Homer, Joe and Ray; and an infant baby.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Lou (Jones) Cunningham; children: Terry Charles and Teresa Cunningham and Melva Jan Crowder; step-children, James T. Worsham, Karen (Kay) and David Robbins; grandchildren: Charles Roy Cunningham, Claire Cunningham, L.B. Mitchell, Jolene and Wally Taylor, Nicholas Crowder and Jessica Crowder; step-grandsons: Matthew and Josh Worsham and Jonathan Huddleston; great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Autumn Taylor; mother of his children, Billie Worsham; nephews: Larry, Harry, Roy Lee, Jerry and George Cunningham; nieces: Inez Willard, Jimmie Sue Anders, Laura Cunningham, Aline Cunningham and Judy Crump; and many friends.

Memorial contributions in Melvin’s memory may be made to the Bateman Cemetery Association, c/o Danny Buckner, 1101 W. San Antonio, Lockhart, Texas 78644.

The family received friends on Friday, July 16, 2010 from 6 -8 p.m. at McCurdy Funeral Home. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at the Bateman Cemetery, Bateman, Texas.
