Peggy L. Butler Duda was born July 2, 1936, in San Augustine County Texas. She passed away on Nov. 14, 2016, to go to her Heavenly Home.

Her parents were Allie V. Quinn Butler and J.D. Butler; she has two sisters, Joy Violet Butler Garsee and Sherby Ann Butler Ford; four children: Jordon A. Smith, Jennifer L. Smith Davis, Jed B. Smith and Justin B. Smith

; three step-children; Stefanie T. Duda, Jeffrey R. Duda and Gregory M. Duda; five grandchildren: Lacey R. Smith Rainey, Luther L. Davis III, Heather L. Smith, Thya N. Davis Lindsey, and Desmone D. Smith; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Peggy graduated from the Goodwin School in San Augustine County Texas in 1954, attended Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, and graduated with a Nursing Degree. As a Registered Nurse she excelled in Pediatric Nursing, her nursing career also took her to Hospitals, Nursing Homes, and Home Health Care where she was well respected.

Peggy met Robert G. Duda in 1982, and they were married on Feb. 2, 1999, on the Island of Kauai, Hawaii. She cherished her family and as a natural born caretaker, she always found a way for her family to be happy and remain close.

Peggy was proud of her heritage and being a true Texan lady she was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the Texas Federation of Republican Woman, a life member of the Republican National Committee, and a member of the National Society of the United States Daughters of 1812. As a conservative she supported the Republican Party, was an active member of the Caldwell County Republican Women’s organization. In 2007 she founded the Dictionary Project in Caldwell County where she procured and distributed dictionaries to over 6,000 third grade students.

Peggy attended the Tabernacle of Deliverance Church in Lockhart, she was a devout Christian and was constantly reading and studying the Bible. She enjoyed her life, she loved gardening and sewing, was an extraordinary cook and an extremely talented painter.

An open casket viewing will be held from 5 – 7:30 p.m., with a service at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, at the McCurdy Funeral Home in Lockhart.   The casket will travel to the Attoyac Baptist Church in San Augustine County, Texas, an open casket viewing will be held from 12:30 – 2 p.m. with a service at the church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016. Peggy will be laid to rest with her family at the Church Cemetery, following the service a meal will be provided at the Church Hall.
