Born and raised in Lockhart, Ramon was married to his loving wife of 57 years, Maria Hernandez. He served in the Army as a Sergeant in the Battery B 318th Field Artillery in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of operations. He supervised eight crew members of 155 mm Howitzer in moving, emplacing, displacing and withdrawing the piece in combat.

He is survived by his wife, Maria; daughters, Mary Salinas and husband Johnny, Gloria Garza and husband Johnny, Dora Contreras and husband Albert; son, Richard Hernandez and wife Yolanda; grandchildren, Veronica, Melody, Gabriel, Sharon, Genevieve, Isaac, Emerald and Hillary; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Selena, Jesse Marie, Julio III, Gilbert II, Javan, Marisa, Breanna, Ramon, Jimmy II, Gabriel II, Josiah, Maria and Khalil. He is also survived by a sister, Angela Estrada.
Serving as pallbearers were Gilbert Harros, Isaac Hernandez, Jimmy Guzman, Gabriel Contreras, Hector Betancourt-Campos, and Julio Harros III.
Mr. Contreras gallantly served his country during World War II as a Sergeant in the Battery B 318th Field Artillery. Decorations and citations received were American Theater Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon, one Service Stripe and two Over Seas Service Bars.
