Robert Alan Matthews

Robert Alan Matthews, 51, of Luling, Texas passed away on Friday, April 16, 2004 in College Station, Texas. He was born on November 9, 1952 in Luling, Texas to Annette DeViney and Dr. Thomas W. Matthews. He married Georgiann Edwards on June 5, 1976 in Luling, Texas.

Robert and Georgiann owned and operated Luling Animal House. He was a

member/Elder of the First Christian Church in Luling and onetime deacon of the First Christian Church in Lockhart, a member of the Luling Kiwanis club for 23 years and past president, former chairman of the Caldwell County Muster Committee, and was the chairman of the Mr. Yuk campaign. He was a volunteer firefighter and Fire Chief of the Southeast Caldwell County VFD, and a licensed paramedic for both Luling and Lockhart EMS. He served as a trustee of the Luling ISD School Board for eight and one-half years, and was seeking re-election.
As an Aggie, class of “75, Robert was a fan of Texas A&M University and everything maroon. His interests included traveling, studying history, reading, Saturday mornings with the Dr. Demento radio show, volunteering his time to local organizations, spending time with his two children, and spoiling his beloved ferrets. Robert”s hobbies also included studying astronomy and comparing notes over meteorology with his son.

He is survived by Georgiann, his wife of 27 years; his daughter, Stephanie Timms and husband J.L. of Martindale, Texas; his son Stephen Matthews of Luling; his father, Dr. Tom Matthews of Luling; his sisters Julie Fairchild and husband Clint of Harwood, Suzanne Matthews of Elgin, and Claire Huebinger and husband Keith of Alice; his mother and father-in-law, Mary and Alvis Edwards of Luling.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Annette DeViney Matthews.
Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church with Will Paradeaux officiating on Tuesday, April 20th at 10 AM. Interment was at McNeil Cemetery under the direction of O”Bannon Funeral Home.

Serving as Pallbearers were Clint Fairchild, Keith Huebinger, Kenneth Brown, David DeViney, John Matthews and James Matthews. Honorary Pallbearers were the members of the Luling Kiwanis Club.

Donations in memory of Robert may be made to the Southeast Caldwell County VFD at P.O. Box 983 in Luling, Texas 78648.
