The daughter of a German immigrant father and first-generation German immigrant mother, Ruby learned the art of gardening, canning and baking a variety of food products at a very young age on her parent’s Travis County farm which later served her and her own family very well. There was absolutely nothing more important in Ruby’s life than her family, whether it was preparing her family-famous “Granny’s” German-style potato salad, attending various school events in support of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren or simply doing what “Grannys” do best by bragging to her many friends about the latest accomplishments of all her family members.

A loyal member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Lockhart since the day she married the love of her life, Rudolph H. Schroeder, on June 28, 1939, she was very active in its Women’s Guild support group for many years, a 62-year active member of Lockhart Hermann Sons Lodge # 64, a local Sewing Club, a Bunco Club and previously with the Bluebonnet Dance Club and the Maxwell Social Club. She also loved traveling throughout the U.S. with “Elsie’s Tours,” took her first cruise at the age of 90 with a group of 101 “friends and family” and followed that up with a second cruise two years later in order to attend a granddaughter’s wedding in Cozumel.

The family would like to extend a special “thank-you” to Connie Estrada, who was not only Ruby’s part-time caregiver the past few years, but in the process also became one of her best friends and to both Drs. Barton Romanek and Charles Laurence for their professional medical support.

Family planned to receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at McCurdy Funeral Home in Lockhart. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at McCurdy Memorial Chapel in Lockhart with Rev. Carolyn Rosenbalm and Rev. Wayne Walther officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Lawn Memorial Park near Martindale.
