Stephen Lewis Kinnard, 57, beloved husband, father, and friend, died March 16, 2012, at his home in Odessa, Texas, surrounded by his family.

The youngest son of Olan “Cotton” and Jackye Kinnard, he was born June 16, 1954, in Portales, N.M. He spent his youth in Burkburnett, Texas, where he graduated from Burkburnett High School in 1972. He attended Midwestern State Unive

rsity in Wichita Falls,  where he became a member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity.

He began his lifelong career in the oilfield chemical business in 1977 when he went to work for NL- Baroid Treating Chemicals. In August 1981, he moved with NL to Odessa and began working in the McElroy Field.

When NL was bought by Exxon in 1988, Steve made a transition from sales to the Odessa Exxon Chemical Technical Group. In 1995, he moved to Champion Chemicals where he worked as a sales engineer.

While working for Champion, he received several individual sales awards.

In 2004, he became manager of the Champion Monahans District and held that position for four years. He retired from Kel-Tech, Inc. in December 2011, after 34 continuous years in the oil industry. He had a reputation among his peers as a highly skilled technical oilfield chemical man, and he loved his work.

Steve was a sports fan. He followed baseball, football and basketball. He also enjoyed participating in many sports activities with his family and friends. He played industrial league softball in Luling and Odessa. Later, he began to play golf, and he had a large, wonderful group of friends with whom he played.

Over the years in Odessa, Steve participated in many golf tournament charity benefit activities with these friends.

It was while working for NL Treating Chemicals in Luling, Texas, that he met Fredrica, his wife of 30 years. They married in Odessa on Feb. 27, 1982.

Steve is survived by his wife, Fredrica Kinnard; son, Clifford Carpenter and his wife, Melissa, of Helena, Mont.; daughter, Cassandra Dillavou, of Lockhart; son, Clayton Carpenter, and his wife, Linda, of Odessa; son, Craig Carpenter, and his wife, Valerie, of Lockhart; son, Stephen A. Kinnard, of Austin; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his parents, Cotton and Jackye Kinnard of Breckenridge, Texas; brother, Rick and his wife, Janye Kinnard, of Fayetteville, Ark.; sister, Martye and husband, Ernie Underwood, of Breckenridge, and several nieces, nephews, and Kinnard family relatives.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 401 N. County Rd. West in Odessa. The Reverend Les Jackson will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. John’s.

Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.
