William “Bill” Duane Atwell, 87, of Lockhart, passed away on Nov. 1, 2014, of pneumonia. He was born on May 7, 1927, in Lumber Camp Four, Michigan to Mary Kinder Atwell and William Hiram Atwell.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mavis “Dot” Bates Atwell; his son, Paul B. Atwell; his sisters: Wilba Davies, Helen Barber, Bessie Hartin andDorothy Fairboth

am; and his half-brother, Jack Rayment.

He is survived by his son, William D. Atwell, Jr., anddaughter-in-law, Lee Anne, of Austin, and his daughter, Elizabeth Diane Knauss and son-in-law, David, of Lockhart; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; half-sister, MaryAnn Olsen and brother-in-law, Larry of Illinois; sister-in-law, Barbara Rayment, of Michigan and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bill Atwell was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army Air Force, and U.S. Air Force from May, 1944 until August 1967 for a total of 22 years, 11 monthsand three days. He also retired from Gulf Oil Corporation.

Bill was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lockhart, an endowed member of Lytton Springs Masonic Lodge 487 A.F. & A.M., a recipient of the Golden Trowel Award, a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine, a life member and Past Commander of V.F.W. Post 8927, a life member at large of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 61 of Texas, and a member of American Legion Post 41, of Lockhart.

Bill touched so many lives in many ways and he dearly loved his family and friends. He was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Bill Atwell will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Family will receive friends at McCurdy Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, at McCurdy Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Memory Lawn Memorial Park.

    Mr. Atwell will be missed. He reminded me so much of my pa-pa. He loved watching the birds outside his window. Even when he wasn’t feeling 100% he always smiled. As a nurse he is definetly one of those patients who I will always remember.
