Rayford Leland Etheredge, 97 passed away Jan. 13, 2014. He was a long time Houston resident. He was born in Dale, Texas, on Nov.  16, 1916, to Foster and Doll Etheredge. He grew up in Lockhart, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Eva Etheredge; and brothers, Harlan and Jessie Etheredge.

Rayford served his country in the U.S. Army”s 36th division du

ring World War II. He was a medic in Europe and N. Africa. He was awarded the Purple Heart and five Bronze Stars.

Rayford worked for SW Bell Telephone Co. until his retirement in 1981.  He also served as the Chairman of the Board for the Houston Telephone Credit Union.  He served as the Commander of the American Legion Hall in Lockhart. Rayford was a charter member of First Lockhart Baptist Church.

Rayford touched many lives and will be greatly missed.  He is survived by a host of long-time friends and many family members. We would like to thank all of the caregivers and Houston Hospice for their gentle care.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate his life at Eeds Funeral Home in Lockhart, Texas on Thursday Jan. 16, 2014. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. – noon, and a funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Houston Hospice.
