Rosa Lee Anton Playfair Powell passed away on Dec. 7, 2013, in Seguin, Texas. Rosa Lee was born in Prairie Lea, Texas, on Aug. 13, 1924  to Ed and Frieda Anton. She married Dr. James Playfair. They had four children, Kathryn, Patricia, John and Mitchell, and resided in Luling. She subsequently moved to Lockhart. She later married A. D. Powell and resided in Kingsbury, Texas.

Following her graduation from Lockhart High School in 1942, she enrolled in nursing school and began her nursing career in Luling. She raised her children while working as a nurse, nursing supervisor and later hospital administrator at Lockhart Hospital. She assisted in the birth of hundreds of Lockhart residents. She was also Director of Nurses at Golden Age Home. In the late 1970’s she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State University. She returned to nursing and worked as an OR nurse at Edgar B. Davis Hospital in Luling.

For most of her life she was a single parent and raised four children. She was a member of Emanuel Episcopal Church where she taught Sunday school. Rosa Lee was an avid bowler playing in leagues at Oil City Bowling Lanes in Luling and traveled with her team to many tournaments. She was a gifted seamstress and crocheted countless afghans for family, friends, and charitable endeavors. Her interests included playing bridge and being a member of Beta Sigma Phi. She had a thirst for knowledge and enjoyed many years as a member of a study club in Luling, Texas.

She met A.D. Powell and following a whirlwind courtship, eloped to Mexico to the surprise and delight of family and friends. Her marriage to A.D was an adventure that included cruising the Panama Canal and a helicopter ride over a volcano in Hawaii.

Predeceasing her were her parents, Ed and Frieda Anton, and one brother Joe Anton. She is survived by daughters, Kathryn Young, of Marion, Texas, and Patricia Blackwell, of Lockhart; sons, John Playfair and wife, Brenda Playfair, of Bastrop, Texas, and Mitchell Playfair, of Kingsbury.

She is also survived by five grandchildren: Thomas Playfair, of Salado, Texas, Jason Playfair, of Kingsbury, Ginny Young, of Marion, J.C. Short, of Austin, and Kaitlan Young, of Marion, Texas, and step-grandchildren, Sarah Dunn, Thomas Dunn and Laura Krcmar, as well as three great-grandchildren, Brayden and Lariat Playfair, and Bryton Short.

A visitation was held Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, from 5 – 7 p.m. at Eeds Funeral Home. Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, with burial at Lockhart City Cemetery.

    Kathryn, Patricia, John and Mitchell and all of the extended families.

    So sorry to hear about the death of Rosa Lee. I always had plans to visit to learn more about our ancestors, but, once again time and our Savior has had different plans. Would love to stay in touch with you all. God bless you and be with you during this time of grieving…Verda Lee Adler, daughter of Lena Anton and granddaughter of Gustav Anton.
