Lockhart High School has hired a new Head Girls’ Basketball Coach, and she is ready to lead the team to a winning season.
Melissa Fisher was hired at the end of the 2007-2008 school year and has been busy with summer basketball camps as she transitions into a Lion Country state of mind.
“I’m very excited to have t

he opportunity to lead the Lady Lions,” Fisher said. “A priority will be to bring back a winning tradition with the girls basketball team. From what I’ve heard from some of the girls this program has seen a lot of transition in the last four years and I intend to change that. I’m committed to put in the time and the effort required to accomplish a championship level program.”
Fisher, who was born and raised in San Antonio, remembers visiting her grandparents A.L. and Martha Fisher in Lockhart when she was a child.
“I have fond memories of Lockhart from when I was young,” she said. “I have loved this community ever since. I have eaten plenty of barbeque and spent a lot of time getting sunburned at City Pool. My grandparents are buried at the cemetery on 183.”
After graduating from Churchill High School, Fisher attended Abilene Christian University where she received a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science.
She relocated to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex to begin her teaching and coaching career soon after graduation.
“After a good deal of time building a foundation of coaching basics and strategies in the metroplex, I was glad to move back closer to family and friends. Most of my family still lives in San Antonio,” Fisher said.
During her seven-year stay in the DFW metroplex, Fisher coached at Highland Park, Little Elm and The Colony.
In 2006, she returned to Central Texas and took a job as the freshman coach at Westlake High School. The freshman team attained a record of 51-5 during a two-season period under Fisher’s coaching. She also assisted with the varsity team and accompanied them to the playoffs both seasons.
In Lockhart, Fisher will be responsible for coaching girls as an assistant volleyball coach and the Head Girls’ Basketball Coach. She will also be teaching physical education classes at Lockhart High School.
“I’m looking forward to the fall season when I’ll have an opportunity to meet with the parents of these great girls,” she said. “I have nothing but praise for the Lockhart ISD. I look forward to working with the LHS staff. Everyone from Mrs. Kirst to Mr. Ramirez to Ms. Voigt and everyone in between, they have all been very welcoming to me. Everyone is nice to be around and great to work with.”
Fisher received her Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association in 2007 and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Sport Management from Texas State University.
