The Junior Varsity Lions lost to the Clemens Buffaloes 20-14 in a well-contested football game at Clemens on Thursday, Oct. 18.
The Buffaloes jumped out ahead during the first half of the game, leading the Lions 14-0. The Lions answered back with an offensive drive lead by Tyler Tolley and Brian Martinez, who took the game to

within eight points.
Tolley threw the ball well, completing several passes during the game including a 13-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Till in the third quarter. Martinez finished with about 80 total rushing yards. Dylan Messerley scored on a 43-yard inside reverse play in the fourth quarter and Tony Moreno caught a halfback pass from Tolley for the two-point conversion.
The defense struggled early in the game, but came back to out play the Buffaloes in the second half.
“We are starting to execute our passing game when we need it the most,” Coach Bryan Robinson said. “We have a great opportunity this week to defeat the Lehman Lobos at their place. Come on out and support the JV Lions.”
The Freshman Lions lost to the Clemens Buffaloes 22-0 and according to Freshman Coach Steve Garza, “Nothing positive came out of that game.”
On Thursday, Oct. 11 the Junior Varsity Steele Knights defeated the JV Lions at Steele with a score of 29-8.
“The team played much better the second half,” Robinson said. “We need to improve on coming out at the start of the game and play with the same intensity as we did in the second half.”
Offensive standouts were quarterback Tolley, Moreno, Messerley, Till and Martinez who led the offense in a third quarter drive that resulted in a seven yard touchdown pass by Tolley to Till. The two-point conversion was good for a total of eight points for the Lions.
Other standouts were Nolan Lockhart, Josh Foster, Jordan Officer, Dion Turner, Cody Reed, Brian Post, Josh Hernandez and Ryan Houston.
“I thought we had some great opportunities slip because of mental mistakes,” Robinson said. “If we keep our focus on executing the plays and are aggressive on defense, we can play with anyone in this district.”
The Freshman Lions team also lost to Steele on Thursday. They lost with a score of 41-6. Omar Estrada scored the only touchdown for the Lions. The two-point conversion failed. Brooks Pittman was injured in the game.
The Junior Varsity and freshman teams play against Lehman at Lions Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 25. Games start at 4:30 p.m.
See you at the game.
