Lady Lion volleyball starts season with back-to-back wins

The Lockhart Lady Lions volleyball teams have been hard at work through the month of August, getting back to the courts even before they get back to class. After a pair of scrimmages the first week of August, the Lady Lions opened regular season play on Aug. 10 -11, with back-to-back appearances at Austin Crockett and Fox Tech in San Antonio. Across the board, the Lady Lions

were successful in their first two endeavors, with the Freshman, JV and Varsity teams all scoring victories over both opponents.

Varsity Lady Lions
The Varsity Lady Lions defeated Crockett in four on Aug. 10, with game scores of (25-25), (25-16), (22-25) and (25-18).

They followed up the next day with a three-game victory, (25-19), (25-7) and (25-17) over Fox Tech.

Offensively, Alexandria Carter had eight kills, while Gabrielle Galvan contributed six.

Victoria Hill, Mackinzee Griebel and Morgan Von Dohlen all had assists for the Lady Lions.

The Varsity Lady Lions played a tournament in Stockdale Aug. 12 – 14, and brought home the second place trophy.

Pool play began on Friday, and Lockhart beat Poteet and Randolph but lost to Stockdale.

The team began bracket play with a (30-28), (25-28) victory over Pearsall, which placed the Lady Lions in the Championship Game.

During the Pearsall game, Meredith Oliveros had five digs and three kills. Jarin Hazelett and Cassie Arredondo both played well defensively. Victoria Hill had six assists and Alexandria Carter had three aces.

Lockhart lost a close match (18-25), (21-25) and (16-25) to the host team, Stockdale, in the championship game on Saturday.

During the Championship game, Brittany Erickson had nine digs. Alexandria Carter, Gabby Galvan, Victoria Hill, Mackinzee Griebel, Meredith Oliveros and Kameron Schnautz all picked up kills for the Lady Lions.

Alexandria Carter was named to the all-tournament team for her excellent offensive and defensive play.

JV Lady Lions
The JV Lady Lions won over Crockett in three, picking up the first and third games, and dropping the second.

Offensively Amber Hazelett, Hannah Kile and Shelby Duran did well. Leslie Jackson had four good kills.

Defensively, coaches credited Carissa Adair and Trena Lorett for making key plays for the team.

Coach Brittany Wilson said the Lady Lions played very well as a team against Fox Tech, winning the first two games and picking up the match victory.

Mikaela Flores, Katrina Mills, Brooke Hoskins and Megan Placke were strong on offense, and Jessica Estrada and Patricia Lucas, “stepped up for us in the end,” Wilson said.

Freshman Lady Lions
The Freshman Lady Lions entered high school competition with a bang, handing crushing back-to-back defeats to Crockett and Fox Tech.

Against Crockett, Reagan Voigt, Eboni Sattiewhite and Morgan Seeliger contributed strong offensive play, while Lauren Scheulke established herself on defense, helping the Lady Lions to a (25-18), (25-9) win.

The next day in San Antonio, the Lady Lions won (25-17), (25-13) over Fox Tech, with key contributions made from the serving line by Raven Reed and Zierra Gonzales.

The Lady Lions will be on the road for the rest of the month, traveling to Luling, Floresville and San Antonio in preparation for their home opener. They will host the South San Antonio Lady Bobcats in the first home game of the season on Aug. 31, 2010. Freshman and JV games will begin at 5 p.m. in the “Old Gym” and the Lion’s Den, respectively. Varsity play starts at 6 p.m. on the main floor of the Lion’s Den.
