Lady Lions fall to district powerhouses Canyon, New Braunfels

Last week the Lady Lions played host to New Braunfels and New Braunfels Canyon. The Lady Unicorns came in to the Lions Den as the defending state champs and currently ranked No. 1 in the state.

The Lady Lions played with a lot of heart and determination, yet were unable to overcome a very powerful Lady Unicorn team. The final sco

res were 14-25, 11-25 and 11-25. The Lady Lions were led by Kelly Witte with five kills followed by Camille Clay with four and Jenee Clay with three. Shelby Hendrichs led the assist category with six, followed by Andrea Carter with five and Meredith Moore with three.
Defensively, Ashley Moore and Ashley Johnson led the Lady Lions in digs with eight each. They were followed by Witte with five, Brianna Hinnenkamp with four and J. Clay and A. Carter with three each. Witte also led blocking, with three blocks completed.
“I was proud of the effort that the girls gave against such a formidable opponent,” said head coach Jeff Witte. “After having faced the Unicorns twice this year it is clear why they are the defending state champions and top-ranked team in the state.”

Friday night the Lady Cougars came into Lions Den fresh off a victory over 15th-ranked Hays.
“We really struggled with our serve reception tonight, especially in Game One,” Coach Witte said. “We had a total of nine service reception errors in Game One and were only able to get four of our passes inside the 10 foot line.”
The Lady Lions improved as the night went on, yet were not able to overcome a very powerful Cougar team. The final scores were 11-25, 13-25 and 15-25.
The Lady Lions were led offensively by C. Clay with eight kills followed by A. Moore with four and K. Witte with three. Hendrichs led the assist category with six, followed by Natalie Raemsch with three and K. Witte with three each.
Defensively the Lions were led by Hinnenkamp and K. Witte, who had seven digs each, followed by C. Clay and A. Johnson with six each. K. Witte also led blocking with one block.
