Lady Lions honor seniors, fall 74-23 to Del Valle

The Varsity Lady Lions hosted the Del Valle Lady Cardinals at the Lion’s Den on Friday, Feb. 6 and dropped the game 74-23 on Senior Night.

Seniors Vanessa Gonzales, Chelsy Martinez and Jaimee Bennett were honored for their hard work and dedication to the basketball program and Lockhart High School.

“The Lady Lions

faced a tough final home game against the visiting Lady Cardinals,” Coach Melissa Fisher said. “As the game opened, Del Valle won the tipoff and took it to the Lady Lion defense.”

The Lady Lions held strong at first, preventing the Lady Cardinals’ offense from scoring in their first three attempts.

The Lady Lions scored first. Gonzales made the first two baskets in the game giving Lockhart a brief 4-0 lead.

“The tide turned as Del Valle woke up and increased the intensity on defense,” Fisher said. “The Lady Lions struggled the rest of the game, fighting against a very powerful Del Valle press.”
The Lady Lions had trouble scoring again after the Lady Cardinals put points on the board.

Lockhart scored only 11 points in the first quarter, while allowing 24 by Del Valle.

The first was the highest scoring quarter for the Lady Lions.

The Lady Cardinals’ highest scoring period was the second, when they added 28 points to their score and allowed only three points from Lady Lions.

The first half ended at 52-14.
Gonzales led the scoring in the first with six points. She made three two-pointers. Desirea Winn scored three points with a two-point shot and a free throw. Tori Hill made a two-pointer.
Cassie Schroeder made two out of four free throws and Andrea McKinney made one free throw in the second quarter.

The Lady Cardinals softened their attack in the second half. They scored 11 points in both the third and fourth quarters, while the Lady Lions scored six in the third and three in the fourth.

Brandi Stacks made a pair of two pointers, while Karla Stovall added a two-point shot of her own in the third.
Gonzales made a two-pointer in the fourth and Alisha Officer sank one of two free throws.

Gonzales led the Lady Lion scoring with eight points.

“Karla Stovall made her Varsity debut Friday night, helping to shut down the paint and collecting nine rebounds. “ Fisher said.

Martinez had four steals. Schroeder and Officer each contributed a blocked shot.

The Lady Lions hosted their last district game against the Elgin Lady Wildcats at the Lion’s Den on Tuesday, Feb. 10. Check next week’s Post-Register for scores and highlights.
