Lady Lions press forward with 8-2 District record

The Lady Lion varsity softball team ended the first round of district play on March 30, as they took a shocking 12-0 loss to Smithson Valley.

Although the Lady Lions were disappointed in their showing against the Rangers, they were able to produce three victories to start round two of district play defeating, the Lehman Lobos, the Alamo Heights Mules and the Buffalos from Sc

hertz Clemens.

On Friday, April 1, Lockhart defeated the Lehman Lobos 6-0. The Lady Lions scored three runs in the first, two in the second, and one in the fifth innings.

Mikaela Flores led off the first inning with a triple, followed by Mackinzee Griebel with a ground-out and RBI. Reaching base was Taylor Rives, who drew a walk and Brianna Ortiz, who moved the runners on a hard hit double.

Chelsea Capello tallied two RBI’s as she hammered a double to put Lockhart on the board 3-0.

In the second inning the Lady Lions scored again with a single from Griebel, a triple from T. Rives, and a single from Amanda Capello, bringing the score to 5-0.

The final run in the fifth would be scored by Morgan Rives who hit a double and continued on the bases off an error committed by the Lobos.

Lockhart was defensively solid, with zero errors. Senior Taylor Rives threw a no-hitter at the mound, striking out seven batters on the way to the victory.

C. Capello went 2-4, while Ortiz an M. Rives both contributed doubles, Flores and T. Rives picked up triples, and Griebel, A. Capello and Gabby Ybarra each had singles.

On Tuesday, April 4, the team traveled to San Antonio where they beat the Alamo Heights Mules. The Lady Lions shut out the Mules 10-0 and scored throughout the seven innings of play.

Offensively, the bats were hot as Griebel went 3-5, Ortiz 4-5 (three doubles and three RBI’s), M. Rives, A. Capello and Flores each had doubles; C. Capello and Jessica Henderson both contributed singles.

T. Rives was on the mound, striking out six Lady Mule batters and allowing only one hit.

On Friday, April 8, Lockhart once again run-ruled the Buffalos from Samuel Clemens High School.

The Lady Lions took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Ortiz, M. Rives and C. Capello smashed doubles, followed by Katrina Mills with a single up the middle. M. Rives and C. Capello both picked up RBI’s on the inning.

Lockhart would push more runs in the fifth inning, with singles from Henderson and Ortiz (2RBI’s) and an in-the-park, RBI homerun from M. Rives, who hit a rocket line drive down the right field foul line and into the corner.

In the sixth inning, the Lady Lions kept the momentum going with singles from Griebel and Henderson, followed by the game-ending double and two RBIs from from Brianna Ortiz.

In the circle for the Lady Lions was sophomore Mikaela Flores, who had an outstanding performance on the mound, striking out eight Buffalos and giving up only two hits on the night in her first appearance in a district game for the Lady Lions.

The Lady Lions are now 8-2 in district play and will face the Hays Lady Rebels on Friday, April 15.
