Lady Lions run circles around competition at Lion Relays

As the mornings clear and the days become warmer, Lion and Lady Lion athletes have been gearing up for this year”s track season. During the second meet of the season, the Lockhart Lion Relays, both the Varsity and Junior Varsity Lady Lions proved they will be formidable opponents this year, while their male counterparts, altho

ugh they didn”t fare quite as well, showed power and a competitive edge, as well.

The Varsity Lady Lions scored 154 points to win the meet, bringing in three gold, four silver and five bronze medals in the process.

Experienced thrower Gabby Galvan dominated her fields again this year, with a shot put of 34″09″ and a discus throw of 129″09″ to earn first place in each event. Younger sister Ana Galvan, also an experienced competitive thrower, earned third place in the shot, ending with a mark of 31″11″ and fourth in the discus at 98″09.”

Desiree Roland earned the Lady Lions” other first place individual finish, running the 100-meter hurdles in 15.8 seconds.

She was followed across the finish line by teammate Isis Johnson, who earned second place in 16.2.

Sacora Manning earned a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash, completing the race in 12.6 seconds.

Additionally, Johnson and Manning, along with teammates Andrea Carter and Chelsea Jones, earned a second-place finish in the 400-meter relay.

Another relay team, comprised of Ali Colourciello, Alex Lindsay, Alysia Perales and Jade Ramirez, took second in the 4×800-meter relay.

Carter also competed in the triple-jump, earning third place with a mark of 31″09″.

The 1,600-meter relay team, comprised of Perales, Samantha Cowan, Heather Sandford and Olivia Smith, finished fourth.

Smith earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 1:05.0. Finishing after her, in sixth place, was Toiya Ghant, who finished at 1:14.0.

Cowan also secured a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 26.9 seconds, whil teammate Chelsea Jones finished fourth in 27.1.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Elizabeth Thomas finished third in 57.0 seconds, followed by Kami Schnautz in fourth in 59.2.

Lindsey, also, earned a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:34. Perales took sixth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:56.

The JV Lady Lions took second place in the meet, finishing with 146 team points.

Essence Thompson led the way for the JV Lady Lions, earning two first-place finishes in individual events, and a third gold as part of the 400-meter relay team. Thompson made a mark of 15″06″ in the long jump and a time of 13.3 in the 100-meter dash. She and teammates Michelle Juarez, Bradie Bartsch and Carissa Adair completed the 400-meter relay in 55.2.

Bartsch also competed in the long jump, earning fourth with a distance of 14″01″. Juarez finished fifth in the 100-meter dash at 13.8.

Competing at the JV level in the pole vault, Kami Schnautz earned first place with a mark of 7″06″. Teammates Laura Rivera (5″06″) and Anna Lindstrom (5″00″) placed fourth and fifth respectively.

Leslie Jackson struck gold in the shot put with a 28″02″ throw. Christine Spinks placed fifth at 24″07″.

Finally in field events, Elizabeth Thomas finished fourth in the triple jump at 29″02″.

On the track, Thomas also performed well, earning second place in the 110-meter hurdles at 17.66. She was followed across the finish line by Chanti Cyphers in third at 17.97, and Schnautz in sixth at 19.53.

Natalie Carter earned a second-place finish in the 400-meter, finishing in 1:12.0. Cyphers completed the same course in 1:17.0 to place sixth.

Distance runners Karsyn Stark (13:45) and Jenny Saad (13:56) finished third and fourth respectively in the 3,200-meter run, and later third and fifth (Stark – 6:12 and Saad – 6:23) in the 1,600.

Mercedes Gutierrez (2:53) and Kim Martinez (3:04) placed fourth and fifth in the 800-meter run.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Gutierrez, Schnautz, Kristian Hawkins and Saad finished fourth in 5:04.0.
