The Varsity Lady Lions continued on their road to the playoffs last week, barreling through the competition as they delivered shut-out victories over Alamo Heights and Lehman.
On Tuesday, the Lady Lions hosted Alamo Heights and defeated them with a 10-0 “run-rule” victory in five innings.
The Lady Lions jumped on the board with a bang, scoring seven runs in the second inning.
With two outs, the Lady Lions were able to rack up six hits and capitalize on one defensive error. Giselle Maciel and Lilly Dupert got the inning moving with back-to-back singles.
Amanda Sigala reached first and loaded the bases from an error by the second baseman. Short stop Zierra Gonzales cleared the bases with hard shot to right center for a stand-up triple.
Mackinzee Griebel and Alicia Garcia picked up back-to-back singles to keep the inning alive. Gonzales scored off of Griebel’s single through the middle of the infield. The next Lockhart batter, Mikaela Flores, hit a line drive to right-center to score both Griebel and Garcia.
Flores was able to advance to second on the throw from the outfield and third baseman Katrina Mills quickly brought home Flores with a hit of her own to left field.
The Lady Lions added their eighth run in the fourth.
Griebel led off the inning with her second hit of the game. Garcia reached first base behind her, thanks to an error by the first baseman. Griebel and Garcia advanced a base on a passed ball by the catcher.
Flores came up big again with her second hit to right field, scoring Griebel from third.
Lockhart scored their final two runs in the fifth inning, forcing the victory on the “10-run rule.”
Maciel reached on a base hit to left and Dupert followed her, reaching on an error by the centerfielder.
Gonzales ended the game on her hit to right center that allowed Maciel and pinch runner, Aslynn Garcia score the winning run.
Flores took the win on the mound, striking out eight batters and allowing only one hit through five innings.
On Friday, the Lady Lions were able to avenge an early-season loss to Lehman, beating the Lobos 7-0.
Lockhart capitalized early in the first inning, scoring two runs on a dropped ball by the right fielder. The Lady Lions were held scoreless after that until the sixth inning.
With two outs, the team put together a five-run rally.
Griebel and Garcia started off the rally with back-to-back hits and were driven in to score from a stand-up triple from Flores. Gabby Ybarra knocked in Flores with a line drive to center and was moved to second from a base-hit by Mills.
Maciel drew a walk to load the bases, and Dupert ripped a hard ground ball past the third baseman to score Ybarra and Mills. Zierra Gonzales was also 2-4 with a double.
One again, Flores earned the win, with six strikeouts while allowing only three hits.
The Lady Lions played their final game of the regular season on Tuesday when they hosted the Antlers of Kerrville Tivy. The team’s second-place position in District play virtually guarantees them a bid to the playoffs, where they will likely play during the weekend of April 26 for a Bi-District Championship. Details had not been finalized at press time.
