Lion harriers take second at Moulton Invitational

The Lockhart Boys’ Cross Country team traveled down I-10 to the wonderful village of Moulton, Texas, on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Lion harriers finished second out of six schools competing.

Luling won the overall championship with a score of 25 points. Lockhart was second, with 53 points. District rival Lehman placed third with a score of 74. In fourth place was Nava

rro, scoring 123 points, while Gonzales finished in fifth with 126 and Columbus placed sixth with a score of 142.

The Lions were led again this week by junior Nate Moore, who ran another very good race, winning the individual title with a time of 15:36. The distance of the race was measured at exactly 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). The race was easily the best Cross Country race run to date by Moore, according to Head Coach Scott Hippensteel. Moore was pushed by Michael Barnett, of Luling, who finished second in a close race.

Sophomore Robert Uhr used an impressive burst of energy to catch the number two Luling runner just before the finish line. Uhr finished with a time of 16:17. Sophomore Xavier Espinosa was the third Lion to finish. Espinosa ran a solid race to place 17th out the nearly 60 runners in the race. Espinosa finished with a time of 18:03.

Sophomore Nicholas Avey is getting better every week, according to Hippensteel. Avey was the fourth finisher for Lockhart, placing 20th with a final time of 18:25. Rounding out the top five was sophomore Colton Russell, who placed 21st with a time of 18:25.

Sophomore J.D. Amaya had another strong race, placing 23rd in 18:58. Amaya, along with sophomore Carlos Martinez, both do double-duty for Lockhart High, as they also play in the band on Friday nights and then come to the meets to run on Saturday mornings. Martinez placed 51st in Saturday’s race. Martinez had a time of 22:01.

Junior Eli Spring placed 26th in the varsity race for the Lions, with a time of 18:58. Sophomore Mario Maciel placed 40th in 20:07, while teammate Erik Moreno, a freshman, placed 44th in 20:47.

Seven Lockhart runners competed in the Junior Varsity division. They were: John Henrick – ninth place; Hunter Maness – 21st; Francisco Mendez – 23rd; Kevin Halligan – 24th; Nicholas Weatherby – 25th; Daniel Cruz – 43rd; Erik Hopple – 49th; and Richard Fry – 55th.

Lockhart will be running a time trial this Saturday at Lockhart High School beginning at 7 a.m.
